Haunted Overnight at the Mansfield Reformatory

The Mansfield Reformatory is a retired prison where they filmed parts of The Shawshank Redemption. It is allegedly haunted and, two nights a year, they allow people to stay in the cells overnight for $85.

The price includes:
* Overnight Access to the Reformatory
* Guided Ghost & History Tour of the Prison
* Late Night Dinner / Soft Drinks, Water & Coffee
* All Night Private Ghost Hunt throughout the entire building

Spots are first-come, first-serve and they supposedly fill up fast.

I have booked my ticket through the website (www.prairieghosts.com/overnight2.html). Everyone who's interested will need to book on their own. Choose the April 20th date, not the July date. The form requires you to select which night you are attending.

Please let the group know in the comments section once you have an official confirmation.

Kathie and I just watched The Shawshank Redemption. It was fun to see the movie and all the places that we were last night. Did any of you get a picture of the wood beam that said Brooks was here and Red was too?

    April 21, 2013

    • Jared M.

I did. But I took it in the dark with a flash, so it's not the most artsy shot...though it was fitting. I will post all my photos, including the group shot, tomorrow. Thanks everyone for coming! I had a great time!!

Today is almost over... No pics. Boo Hoo

      April 22, 2013

  • Kathie H.

I am truly glad I went on this trip (even more so after watching Shawshank Redemption yesterday with Dawn) but I agree with Dawn that the price was a bit steep for the experience. I wasn't creeped out at all but I still loved exploring the prison and meeting all you guys. I must be missing the requisite willing suspension of disbelief (or law school permanently knocked it out of me).

    1 · April 22, 2013

Mansfield was fun with good friends and good company. We had fun in spite of the utter lack of any haunting experience. But, the prison was not worth the price of admission. You have to wonder when the intro by the guide to the tour tells you that it's a mistake for the ghost hunting programs to only stay a few hours or one night and expect to see anything.... and that is just exactly what they charged us for. LOL

    April 21, 2013

    • Jared M.

I agree...though I really wasn't expecting to see a ghost. As I said, I'm a skeptic. Though it would have been awesome to see something, I still enjoyed being with all the ghost hunters and being in the prison overnight. It was creepy just being there!

It's going to be cold tonight (upper 20s to low 30s) so bundle up everyone!!

    April 20, 2013

Billie and I were discussing what we're going to wear/bring in our small bags. Here are some ideas: Scarf, hat, gloves, extra socks, sweatshirt, digital voice recorders, flashlight(s) (MANDATORY!), camera, snacks, water bottle, alcohol (for the bathrooms...just in case). I'm bringing a heavier coat and a lighter coat and then will leave one in my car. They provide water...which may be in bottle form--in which case I'll leave my water bottle in the car.

    2 · April 20, 2013

  • Billie

It's true. You don't actually sleep there. My suggestion would to be to stay up as late as you can tonight and sleep in as late as you can tomorrow. That's what I did last time and I was fine. Plus, staying up late tonight will be good practice ; )

Did I see somebody post that you are not supposed to sleep while there? Gonna be tired by morning if true.

I just heard back from American Hauntings: "We have everyone's waivers, you're all on the list and confirmed! Small packs should be fine! We look forward to seeing you at the overnight!

Jared -- Do you have a list of what we're allowed to bring (or keep in our cars)? Also, do we have to bring proof we're signed up? I don't think I have anything but a copy of the release.

    April 19, 2013

    • Jared M.

      1) I don't have a list. They say flashlights are MANDATORY and large backpacks or cases are off-limits. 2) I've written them to make sure that small backpacks are okay. 3) I'm going to print out the release just to make sure, but I also wrote them and asked if they could confirm ALL of our names...I don't know if they'll do it and I didn't know Dawn's last name or Marcus' last name. I'll let you know what they say.

HI Jared. I had posted a while back that I had called and at that time there was no list they could review. Also the guys said no reason you shouldn't be able to bring a small backpack. Let me know if you hear different. thanks!

Jared & Billie, can one of you get us the address for Der Dutchman. We were talking & Kathie & I decided to just meet u for dinner there & drive separately. Okay?

I vote "NBC." But either is fine. If you get there, ask under either of those names.

I was thinking about it, and it would probably be best if we met at the Der Dutchman in Bellville at 5 pm (instead of 5:30). That will give us plenty of time to eat and get to the reformatory. If that works for everyone, I will pick Kathie/Dawn up at 2:30 and Billie up at 2. Please comment if that works for you.

    April 17, 2013

HI All- I called the business that hosts these (not reformatory) and they said we bring own flashlights, and that we can bring own snack in a small pack or bag if we wanted to. So I plan to bring a small purse for snacks- but don't forget flashlights!

    2 · April 10, 2013

  • Jared M.

Ok. I found a restaurant called Der Dutchman that's open on Saturdays until 8 pm. It's located 13 miles from the reformatory but on the way there. It's an Amish restaurant and they have both a gluten free menu and a few vegetarian entrees. I won't be hurt if people want to go somewhere else...but if people want to eat all together, this is the only thing I found besides Chipotle.

    April 9, 2013

    • Jared M.

There's a bunch of them in Ohio. This one's in Bellville--just south of Mansfield.

      April 10, 2013

    • Billie

I didn't know that! The only one I've ever heard of is in. Waynesville. I thought it was an original. I'm kind of sad.

      April 10, 2013

  • Billie

You don't actually get to sleep there. You do stay for the night, but it is spent exploring the prison. You should sleep as late as possible the day of the event so you won't be too tired as the night wears on.

      Glad I'm not driving.

      April 9, 2013

I did this last year and we were allowed to bring backpacks. We were also allowed to go out to our cars during the night if we needed to. So, either way.

    April 8, 2013

    • Billie

I guess they changed the rules on backpacks, but you are still allowed to go out to your car as needed, so you can pack a cooler or whatever if you wanted to.

      April 8, 2013

    • Dawn

BTW, I used to love Indian food, but due to digestive problems (to put it mildly), I have had to go completely gluten free. I am doubtful there is much I could eat at an Indian restaurant. But, we'd have to check with the restaurants.

    1 · February 6, 2013

If you have NOT yet signed up and do NOT have a reservation, you MAY NOT be able to get one. This is not a decide-at-the-last-minute event. You need to sign up, get a reservation with an OUTSIDE 3rd party provider, and complete a waiver that must be turned in to the Reformatory by March 8th. So far, Jared, Kathie, Kippie and I are the only ones with reservations. Hello, there are 13 RSVPs for this event. Eric, Kate, Dylan, Billie, Joe, Scott and CJ.... do you have your reservations yet or what? This is gonna be so fun, I just know it. I can hardly wait. I hope y'all get your *beeeeeeep* together and make sure we have a good group for it. <g>

    February 6, 2013

  • Dawn

In your confirmation, you will have received the following: The waiver that is attached to this confirmation must be completed and signed and mailed to American Hauntings with 45 days of the event. It must be received in our office no later than ***March 8, 2013*** -- No Exceptions! This is not our rule, but one that is made mandatory by the staff at the OSR. Failure to return the waiver will mean that you will be removed from the list with no refunds. Mail the waiver to: American Hauntings
    1407 S. 34th Street
    Decatur, IL 62521

    February 6, 2013

  • Jared M.

They sent it to me with my confirmation. I can send you a copy, if you need it. They want the waiver at least one month before the event, so you have a little bit of time still.

I got my reservation for April. Kathie is my plus 1, but since she's now a member... I wonder if she's going to RSVP on here separately? Jared, were you able to change your ticket? Kathie, did you change yours?

    December 17, 2012

  • Jared M.

OKAY. I only ended up hearing back from Joe, Dawn, and Kathie. And, of these, the majority preferred to go in April (the original date), so we're back on for April. Sorry about the confusion. If you still want to go book your tickets ASAP since April only has a few spots left!

    December 17, 2012

  • Jared M.

Thank you, Dawn, for the reminder. I just booked my reservation through the website (https://www.prairieghosts.com/overnight2.html). Make sure to check the box for the JULY 27, 2013 date---NOT the April date.

I contacted American Hauntings, the group that runs it, and they have more than 12 spots available. If you want, you can post on here once you've got a confirmation so we know who's officially going!
