I’m a SFF author, and an active member of SFWA. My short fiction won 1st place in Writers of the Future and has appeared in various pro publications. I’m repped by Juliet Mushens of The Agency Group, but I’m planning on also self-publishing a series.

What Andrea is saying about this Meetup Group

Nice people, helpful critiques. The organizer didn't seem to be well-informed about trade publishing, which was disheartening. If you don't earn out your advance you DO NOT have to pay it back. It is a good-faith payment. The paying back is a common myth, but not true. Some information she gave seemed out-of-date. Agents tend to take 15% as an industry standard for domestic sales and 20% for foreign, not 10%, though I know one agent who charges 20% for domestic (when you regularly make 6-figure deals, you can command a premium). Data shows agents get their authors more money, on average, than unagented authors. Search for Tobias Buckell's advance survey. I'm a writer, and I mean business. Love to talk shop. Not the group for me, though. Needs more accurate publishing info. Run a google search on what I said if you need to verify.
