Santa Rosa Contra Dance - Susan Michaels & Bonfire

Santa Rosa Contra Dance

Friday, Feb 15th, 8-11 pm – Beginners’ lesson at 7:30 pm

Caller: Susan Michaels (LA)

Band: Bonfire (LA)
Frank Hoppe (fiddle), Bonnie Insull (flute, whistle, feet, uke), Rick Scher (keyboard, percussion), Victor Garza (bass)

Dance Manager/Host: Marlene Mahan

Location: Monroe Hall, 1400 W College Ave, Santa Rosa

Door: $12 adults, $10 NBCDS members, $7 adults under 25/FT students with ID/financial hardship, $2 ages 6–17, under 6 free.

Info: www.nbcds.org

Contra dancing focuses on pattern, flow and rhythm. It's energetic, so wear loose, comfortable clothes and low, smooth-soled shoes that will stay on your feet (not sandals or running shoes). Beginners are welcome! Please join us for a free lesson a half hour before the dance begins to learn the basic moves. You can come alone or with a partner — our dances are friendly and inclusive, and you’ll probably end up dancing with most of the people in the hall. Remember: “if you can walk you can do this form of dance.”

About Our Dances: Contra and English Country Dance (ECD) are fun, easy to learn, and accompanied by live music. Before each dance, the caller teaches the dance and continues to prompt dancers as needed once the band starts. Because the pattern of moves is repeated often, you learn quickly. Very little footwork is required — just a smooth walking step. Contra dance music features fantastic fiddle tunes, driving Celtic rhythms, Cajun, old-timey and sometimes dashes of Eastern-European and swing. English Country dance music features lively jigs and reels, lyrical triple-time melodies and waltzes.

NOTE: Please help NBCDS conserve resources by bringing your own water bottles/mugs to dances. Scent-free dancing is greatly appreciated as many have severe allergies. Parents, all non–dancing children must be supervised.

This dance is sponsored by the North Bay Country Dance Society, a non-profit organization that promotes and produces American and English Country Dance folk and ritual dancing, music and song in the Wine Country north of San Francisco (Sonoma & Marin counties) since 1992. www.nbcds.org

As one of the beginners... this was my 2nd time Contra dancing ever! I had soooo much fun! EVERYONE was so friendly, helpful and encouraging. I was laughing all night and had a smile on my face the entire time. Susan was fun, and did a great job teaching a class at the beginning and then led some really fun and fascinating dances. I'm definitely hooked and will be back. Thank you everyone was such a fun time. I felt so welcomed and like I was part of a family.

Great dance, wonderful group of dancers. Susan did an amazing job with getting even the beginners through some more challenging moves early in the evening. The music was wonderful and inspiring. I especially loved the mixing in of some not-so-traditional tunes and arrangements. I smiled the whole time!

Yes! I was either smiling or laughing the whole time. I LOVED IT. I'm so glad I went. I almost talked myself out of going because of the commute, but it was well worth the drive. I can't wait to go again!

I had a blast. And I want to thank the experienced dancers who were so very gracious and forgiving of my two left feet and gave such good direction. Nice group of people and a very welcoming environment. Loved the music and Susan Michaels too! :) Thank you NBCD!!!

by smooth soled shoes, do u mean rubber or other soles?

Good: Smooth leather (like on bowling shoes), or hard rubber. Not so good: Sport shoes - grips the floor too much, anything that can damage the wood floor (like stilettos or shoes that leave marks).
