• What we'll do
This will be the second in a series of beginner training hikes designed to familiarize hikers with the North Country Trail. All hikers are welcome, whether or not they are registered for the A100. This hike will go from Route 59 to Sugar Bay, approximately 5 miles.
Meet at the southern Sugar Bay Trailhead, coordinates N 41°[masked]’ W 078°[masked]’ no later than 10AM to set up our shuttle to the start.
Please wear appropriate footwear and layers for the weather, and bring food and water for yourself. Snow on the ground won't necessarily cancel this hike, so be prepared!
For those having trouble with the GPS coordinates, to find the trailhead: From the south, take your best route to Route 59. If coming from the west, head east from Warren, past the dam, and up on top of the plateau, and go about a mile and a half past the Bradford Ranger Station. Take a left onto 321 North and drive about 6 miles. The trailhead is a large parking area on the left, just after the reservoir becomes visible.
If coming along Route 59 from the east, head west from Route 219 about 6 miles, then turn right onto Route 321 north, then follow the directions above.
If coming from the north, take Route 86 to the Quaker Area exit for Allegany State park, but do not turn into the park. Continue along NY Route 280 until you come into Pennsylvania and it becomes Route 346. About a mile past the Willow Bay campground entrance, turn right onto 321 south. Drive approximately 7.5 miles, and the trailhead will be on your right. There is parking for several cars at the trailhead; if you're in a lot that only has space for 3-4 cars, you are at the northern Sugar Bay Trailhead; continue along the road until you see a parking area large enough for 10+ cars.
If these directions don't help, please post here for more specific help. Please don't wait until the day of because there's no signal where this trailhead is so I won't be able to check for any last minute messages. Thanks!
