Paddling/Campout on Pelican Island - Eagle Mountain Lake

North Texas Outdoors is headed out to Pelican Island on Eagle Mountain Lake for day paddling and some primitive camping fun.  The plan is to park at Shady Grove Park, unload the canoes and gear, and paddle out to the island.  We will spend the day swimming, fishing, exploring, paddling, and collecting the litter that's been left on the island.

If you're planning on attending, you'll need to bring your own canoe, rent one, or buddy up with someone else who is going.  Canoe rentals can be had here http://paddlebound.com/rentals.html .

You can also reach the island from Pelican Bay Ramp ($5 launch/park fee for 24 hours) the paddle will take about 45 minutes.  The course keeps you very near the shoreline and in water that's less than 5 feet deep.

The Shady Grove Park in Azle (free to launch and park) is a longer paddle at 1 hour, and after crossing Pelican Bay, the course is the same as making your way from Pelican Bay Ramp.

For those who just want to come out and kayak with the group, you are more than welcome to come out!  There is no obligation to stay overnight.

Everyone should know this island is uninhabited and has no amenities.  You'll have to shuttle in everything you need.  This should include at least one gallon of water per person.  There is a covered pavilion in good repair on the island from improvements made on the island years ago and has been maintained by the Azle-area HAM radio club.

The fine folks at the TRWD strongly discourage open fires on the island.  Bring your camp-stove.

We will meet at 10:00 am at Shady Grove park on Eagle Mountain Lake and have boats loaded and in the water at 10:30 am.  I'll put a large visible marker on the island so late-comers can see where the landing is on the island.

Here's the google map of the island (Look for the green arrow):

Hey David, thanks for offering to help, I'll be there.....

    August 23, 2013

  • Michael (Mike) B.

I spoke with Kyle Culwell, Azle City Parks Director, this morning. He said it is ok to leave your vehicle parked overnight at Shady Grove Park. I called Azle police and told them vehicles will be parked overnight Friday and Saturday night for our campout at Pelican Island. It is free. The gates close at midnight.
I am paddling out to the Island today (Friday) and will camp Friday and Saturday nights - feel free to join me. I will set up an amateur radio station - hopefully be on the air Friday night.
I will also set up a toilet (privacy and sanitation) for the group. There is no drinking water or electricity.
Looks like the weather will be great.

    2 · August 23, 2013

    • Della M.

Awesome! Thanks for calling the Azle police, I had contacted Parks and Recreation and haven't had much luck...I'm interested to see how much of our firewood is left.

      August 23, 2013

The park gates are not locked at midnight.

    1 · August 22, 2013

Candace still come to camp even if you don't get a boat. See David's latest post. The water is down, so wading is a realistic option. :-)

There is no fee to camp.

    1 · August 18, 2013

    • Paul

Dave, When I parked as shady grove I didn't see any mention of a parking fee. Would it be better to park somewhere else? I see shady grove has sign that its closed midnight to 6 am.

      August 22, 2013

    • bart

You could launch from West Bay marina. Check with Walter the marina about launch fee. I would guess it would be a slighty shorter paddle but aginst the SE wind. The marina' s gate shuts with keypad access at 10:00 pm.

I would love to borrow a canoe or kayak just for the day, as I will not be staying overnight. Any other day trippers have a spare?

    August 18, 2013

  • bart

I have two two extra kayaks and will be making the trip to the island today. Launching at 2:30 from shady grove park. Shoot me an email for kayak compatibility .

    August 18, 2013

    • Paul

Bart. I will bring my own and meet u there at 2:30

      August 18, 2013

  • Della M.

Okay, checked out the island on Sunday, and the litter pickup is going to be quite a task, but one that's very worthwhile. I'll be bringing contractor grade trash bags, rubber gloves, and two trash-getters to pick up the "untouchables" that we may run across.

There's a nice shady area around the pavilion for tents, but bring a ground cloth.

I'll be bringing a shovel and branch loppers to do some general maintenance that may be necessary around the campsite.

Canoe rentals can be had here: http://paddlebound.co... they will provide paddles and foam blocks so you may transport the kayak/canoe on the top of your car. However, there is no mention of straps...

I went to the paddlebound site and they said " If you rent 3 or more canoes a trailer is available for use at no additional cost. (Note: Your vehicle must be equipped with a 2' ball hitch and 4-post light connector)" soooo, if several of us need to rent, and one of us has a trailer hitch, we can get transportation for the boats for free! I, however, do not have a trailer hitch, otherwise I'd volunteer.

      August 17, 2013

  • Michael (Mike) B.

I will meet David at his home at 2:45pm Sunday (tomorrow). I will bring some tools and a chain saw and assist with "first round cleanup".

    August 17, 2013

  • Annette K.

Sounds like many here need to rent canoe or kayak! I'd be interested in splitting rent on a canoe. Unfortunately, I don't have a rack on my car to load it on top.

Are there canoes or kayaks for rent closeby?

      August 14, 2013

  • Lorie M.

This sounds like fun! Does anyone have room in their canoe and only going for the day? If not, I'd be up for camping too. This would be my first meetup with the group. Just moved back to the area from San Antonio and excited to keep my hill country adventures going! :)

    August 10, 2013

  • Shreyas K.

I don't have a canoe, so let me figure that out.

    August 9, 2013

Is there a place to rent a canoe or kayak for this trip? Does someone have a extra on I can us?

    August 5, 2013

    • Sam

Right, I have the same question. Are we expected to each bring our own canoes or kayaks? Cara, you can rent them at the Dallas REI.

      August 5, 2013

    • cara g.

ok but how do you get them to the lake if you do not have a truck

Just the event I've been waiting for and I have a free weekend! Love kayaking, but haven't done it in a while. Will not stay for camping, but are looking forward to the day and meeting everyone. It will be my first time with the group.

So this sounds perfect for me but I am short on supplies. Anyone have space in a canoe for me to join? Or is there a canoe rental place and would anyone want to go in on a canoe rental with me?

I also do not have a camp stove yet... would anyone like to let me use yours? I can pitch in for fuel.

    :)

    July 30, 2013

    • Della M.

Lea, there is never a shortage of camp stoves. You can borrow mine. And I have room in my canoe for a passenger, as long as you don't mind dogs.
