Mission Tejas State Park - Tour Texas!

There are no available sites left at the park for this event.

Monthly car-camping adventure touring Texas' State Parks. Bring kids, dogs, and everything that will fit in the car.

Mission Tejas is a small state park past Palestine in the piney woods of East Texas. The park was built by the CCC in the 1930's and has a replica of the first mission in Texas, Mission San Francisco de los Tejas. There's also a historical home on the premises. Mission Tejas is a 3 hour drive straight down 287, and if the dogwoods are in bloom, it promises to be a pretty drive.

The park itself is small, but has a pond, and fishing reels and GPS units for rent. If you've never tried Geocaching, this would be a great opportunity to get your feet wet.

If you exhaust your options at the park, there are many things to do nearby. The Texas State Railroad is a 30 minute drive away in Rusk. The TSR offers a 40 mile round-trip steam train ride through the forest. It departs from Rusk and arrives in Palestine after a 1.5 hour layover. The Caddo Mounds Historic Site is also nearby and offers an interpretative tour of the Native American graves on the site.

We will be staying in campsites 1-6, and then overflow to sites 12 - 15. Unlike the other Tour Texas! campsites, these have water and electricity at each site. (There were only 2 water-only sites in the whole park!) The toilets and showers are a short walk away.

--------------------------------------------

It's car camping, so bring your luxury items. Big tent, big bag, and lots of good food. Campfire games and adult beverages are always welcome. Just remember to put your beverage in an alternate container. State parks have a strict 'no public consumption of alcohol' policy.

Everyone is responsible for securing their own campsite. You can reserve a campsite on Texas Parks and Wildlife's website, however, they will not allow you to reserve a particular site. You'll be asked your preference of site when you check in at the park. Consider sharing a ride and a camping site with another NTO-er.

The first person to check in should post their site number on this meetup page under the comments after checking in, that way we can all get sites near one another.

Firewood gathering is prohibited in all Texas State Parks. Please bring firewood so we may continue our tradition of awesome NTO campfires.

The itinerary for these Tour Texas! adventures is standard:

3:00 - 7:00 Early Bird check-in and camp set up

Great time! Always enjoy meeting new people & learning new things! Great weather weekend.....even the slow rain late Sat pm/Sun pm. Thanks to all of you for your kindness to our kids! I believe they think of ya'll as their Big Kid playmates. :-) Hopefully they will grow up & continue to play and enjoy the outdoors when they become Big Kids like all of us!

One of the many things I learned on this camping trip: Chocolate cake does not travel well!

The park was really small, but in a good way. And the usual crew of fantastic participants and some welcome additions.

This was my first full weekend camping trip and it was so wonderful. Thank you to Della and Scott and Kib for giving all of us the opportunity to have such a great time. Loved the pine trees, the campfire, the food, the hike and the company.

Were on the train going the other way. We took the Rusk to Palestine trip. We probably waved at you when the two trains passed one another.

Won't be able to make this camp out this time after all. I might be able to come and hang out on saturday.

    March 21, 2014

  • Della M.

Everyone that wants to come can come. Here's the official word from the park.

    1) Max of 8 people per site, period.
    2) Max of 2 vehicles per site. Excess vehicles must park in overflow and pay $4 per day.
    2) You can host as many tents on one site as you want. As a courtesy, your tent shouldn't cross over into the next site.
    3) Since we have the whole park it doesn't really matter if tents overflow from one site to the next.

Unless the boys' tent floats away, we'll be there all weekend. This is when I really love my hammock!

      March 20, 2014

    • Jason

Yeah. I hope to come out for Saturday night. The prediction is thunderstorms Saturday. I just don't want to get out there and spend the whole time trying to stay dry for one nights worth of camping. I'll keep a close eye on it. Wish we could come out sooner but we have a school tour Saturday morning.

If you want to ride the train, you'll have to do it on Friday March 21. For some bizarre reason, the train doesn't run on the weekends. +1 and I plan on taking Friday off and head down there to ride the steam train.

Sorry guys i couldnt get into meetup earlier to reply to this. Susan dropped out but has given me her site. I will get there late afternoon. Susan said someone named Princess wanted to share the site with me.

    March 7, 2014

We have space for Barb at another site.

      March 8, 2014

    March 3, 2014

    • Jason

Barb, my daughter and I are also looking for a spot. Perhaps the 4 of us can use my 6-8 man tent and share a spot with someone else. Fewer tents may help our cause.
