Paddle from Sandy Lake to Sam Houston and California Crossing

Rescheduled. The new California Crossing dam with new boat ramps is finally finished! We will celebrate this new paddler friendly launch site, and the advent of spring, by taking a 2 tiered trip that will start out a The Trinity River Kayak Co. http://www.trinityriverkayak.com/ on Sandy Lake Rd, paddle to Sam Houston Park, (aprox 5 miles) stop for lunch (and to let any worn out paddlers catch the shuttle), then, for those up to the challenge of another 6 miles, continue on to the California Crossing Dam with its brand new boat ramps. The Trinity River kayak Co. will supply a shuttle to bring everyone back to their shop where we will be able to enjoy their campfire and have dinner off the grill.
This trip is designed for beginner to advanced paddlers. Boat rentals are available for anyone who does not have a boat or who just wants to try a different boat. Shuttle $15 Boat rental (shuttle included) $36 You can pay in advance to Trinity River Kayak Co. or pay when you arrive, but Jeff would like an idea of how many boats may be needed and how many people he will be shuttling. This is a custom trip, built just for us, not one of the trips normally available to customers, at a special price for our meetup group.
When you RSVP please let me know if you plan to do the entire trip, or think you will want to stop at Sam Houston. We will, of course, let anyone who is tired take the shuttle back from Sam Houston.
We will meet at 10AM behind the shop at TRKC. Plan to be in the water by 10:30.
Bring: Lunch, (or buy one at the shop before we go) Plenty of water, sunscreen, (even in spring the sun can cause burns). A change of clothes in case you get wet. Jeff Varnell and the folks at TRKC will have the grill running for hot dogs and hamburgers after the trip. If you are bringing your own boat and equipment remember that PFD’s are required for everyone.

We had a great time! We had to leave as soon as we got back to the outfitters because I had a meeting in Dallas at two. Hopefully next time we can stay next time and meet everyone. Thank you Teresa - planning that grand scale of an event couldn't possibly easy.

Hi, I live in Burleson 20 min south of Fort Worth. I found out that the Backwoods Paddling Company is opening this weekend in Ft Worth, so I will try to go there for kayaking. It promises to be a lovely weekend.

Update - I have reserved and paid for a tandem kayak at 10 am. We will make sure to bring all the items you listed plus a donation to help with the food and some additional food items to share, along with plenty to drink. Thank you very much for all your hard work organizing this event - it is shaping up to be one of the best organized and undoubtedly most fun events I have seen on meetup yet! Kudos to you for your hard work, Teresa. Thanks for making it all so clear and concise so we can properly prepare.

Teresa we just booked the Tandem Kayak! Looking forward to this. We did have to put a 3hr time frame so I picked 11am to 2pm - there was not the option for 1/2 hour - hope that is okay. See you at 10am tomorrow!

      March 29, 2014

    Continued 4:
TRKC has food and drinks as well as small drybags for phones and valuables. You might want a tarp or blanket to spread out for the picnic lunch as the tables at Sam Houston park are not near the water. There is a restroom at Sam Houston

Be prepared to pack out all trash or deposit it in trashcans. With this many people on the river we want to be careful to leave the river at least as clean as we find it, if not better.

We will be breaking into smaller groups on the river. If you like to go really fast, I will ask you to put in with one of the later groups so that you do not out run the leader and miss the turn to Sam Houston.

I have purchased Hamburgers and Hot Dogs which we will grill up for everyone. Anyone who wants to bring something to add is welcome. Donations for the burgers and dogs will be gratefully accepted as I was not originally planning to feed this many people.
See you Sunday on the water!

    continued 3:
According to the most current hourly weather forecast for the paddling area, the temperature will be in the mid to high 70’s throughout the duration of the trip with clear skys and light winds—a perfect day to paddle. Even though it is not hot yet, everyone should wear sunscreen and hats with brims. Everyone should bring a waterproof jacket or windbreaker just in case Dress in layers so you can start out warm in the morning chill, but can drop a layer as it warms up. Clothing that wicks moisture is best. Do not wear cotton as it tends to hold in moisture, and if you do happen to get wet, it will not dry. Wear layers made of nylon or other man-made fibers, or athletic wear if you do not have actual water gear. You will need water shoes or shoes that you do not mind getting wet or muddy. Bring an extra set of clothing with you in a dry bag or in your car in case you get wet on the trip and need to change.

Bring or be prepared to buy a lunch or snack and plenty of fluids.

    March 28, 2014

  • Teresa

    continued:
Please try to make it to TRKC by 10AM. Park behind the store in the gravel parking area and check in at the “shack” by the parking area so that you can pay, or check in if you have already paid, and we can get you out on the water. Please tell them when you check in whether you plan on doing the whole trip, or just the first 5 miles to Sam Houston. If you are not sure but want to try for the whole trip, but have to change your mind, that is OK, so long as we have a rough estimate of how many shuttle spots we need at each location.

Important Info about Sandy Lake Trip,
(would have sent in an email but don't have email privleges on this meetup)

My phone number is[masked]-7856. Feel free to call if you have questions or need help. I always have my phone on hand, even on the water. The phone number for Trinity River Kayak Company is:[masked]-0649. The shop is located on the Southwest corner of Sandy Lake and the Trinity River.

We may have over 70 people on this trip, so in order to make the check in go a little smoother we recommend that you pay on line in advance. To make sure you are getting the right price, use the url below, select the appropriate tab, either shuttle, kayak, tandem kayak, or canoe, then book the trip called “the Blast” and put in Sunday’s date at 10AM, and follow the instructions to pay. They already have a list of everyone who is renting, but prepaying for either rental or shuttle will speed you to your boat. http://www.trinityriverkayak.com/book-now/

First timer - I will need a boat for 2 for me and my 11 yr son. I imagine we will just do the 1st half unless he's having a great time and we still have energy.

    March 28, 2014

    • Teresa

OK I will put you down for a tandem.

      March 28, 2014

  • Brenda

This will be my first outing with this group - or any group! I'm new to the area. Looking forward to this adventure. I have my own kayak - used once! Will be needing the shuttle though…. Looking forward to it!!

    March 27, 2014

    • Brenda

This will be my first time in Texas. What type of PFD's are required? I have a square boat cushion type. Will that be OK? And what time are we finishing up?

      March 28, 2014

    • Teresa

It must be a wearable PFD. Usually it is a type III kayak PFD, but if you can paddle comfortably while wearing yours, and it has enough buoyancy to hold you up in the water, it should work. If not, I usually have extras and the shop has rentals. We should be back to the shop by around 4 or 5 ish. Then we are cooking hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill for those who want to socialize a little. Timing will depend on which group you go out with and how long a break you take at the lunch stop (and how fast the water is running). With this many people we will not all get back at the same time.

They do not have sit-on-tops for rentals, though they do sell them. They have canoes as well, so if the rental kayaks are not open enough, there is the possibility of getting a canoe instead.

      March 23, 2014

  • Ashley

Hey guys, I'm excited to meet you all! I'll rent my boat. I'm a beginner too, I have never done kayaking before so planning to just do the first 5 miles. :)

I'm questioning my ability to find a suiting kayak. I'm wide and heavy. Even if I find one that holds my weight the width might be a problem. I'm bottom heavy.

      March 21, 2014

    • Teresa

Actually bottom heavy works well in kayaks because, unlike a canoe, you actually sit below the waterline. A little extra balast actually gives extra stability. There are a lot of heavy people in kayaks for this reason. Kayaks do have weight limits, but most of the rental kayaks can hold around 400lbs. If you want to privately email me your info or give me a call at[masked], I will verify that TRKC has a suitable boat for you.

      1 · March 21, 2014

  • Crispin

Still talking to my friend who owns boats about whether or not she is coming so I am TBD on boat rental.

    March 20, 2014

    • Teresa

OK. Just let me know if you need one.

      March 20, 2014

  • Daria

Do you bring your own kayak or are rentals available? And how do we get back to the cars at the end of the trip?

    March 20, 2014

    • Daria

Never mind, I figured out how to expand the description and found the well planned details! Thanks :)
