Explore Anza Mud Caves III

Hey Everyone,

So, this is the third time for us to go out there this season and you would think I would be a seasoned veteran by now. But I'm not. With my ADD, ADHD, OCD, early onset Alzheimer's, and short term memory loss from my party days some years ago, I barely remember most of the details of this excursion. But here are a few things that I do remember:

  • Since we will be going on a weekend day, we will need to get out there very early (like 8:00 am early), hence the 6:00 am meeting time.
  • There are lots of caves to explore, so we will hit the more popular ones first, then move on to the lesser known ones.
  • Although the temps should be comfortable (cold in the morning though), bring lots of water and food for the whole day.
  • There are no facillaties what-so-ever.
  • Bring a flashlight (a headlamp works way better though).
  • This was a lot of fun. You will get dirty (very dirty).

I have a couple things in mind for this trip, but other than that, we will just wing it.

We should all definitely carpool/caravan out there. My vehicle can hold 5 comfortably (12 uncomfortably).

I will be updating this post regularly and I am open to any suggestions anyone has. Not really, just do as I say :-)

See you out there!

Thank you, Jim, for organizing it and thanks to all the guys who gave all of us a helpful push or a boost when we needed it. A big thanks to Cliff for the expert ride to the caves and for being such a sweetheart.

Jim - Earl and Adrian have climbing gear!! :-) We'll make sure to bring it!

At the Hollywood sign is real primitive camping spot (no features) that gets a fair amount of use. Virtually any place can be used for primitive camping. Bow Willow and Mtn Palm Springs are not far away for semi primitive camping (water and toilets). Agua Caliente is also pretty close for relatively luxurious camping (pool, little store, showers, etc.).

I have been to the mud caves many times... Clothes: old jeans (long pants), old shirt, old hat, old shoes with traction, and a reliable headlight (LED, maybe 2). The caves can be very DIRTY and DARK. There are caves of different difficulties including some that require crawling for a while (E-Ticket) and at least one with a rope to upclimb 15-20' (Hidden: good traction helps a lot on this one).

Alright, can experienced cavemen/women give some advice on what to wear? Thank you in advance!

Angela can have my spot. I can alwayss follow. Dont know where this cave place is.

    March 17, 2012

  • cliff

Corie, you and Angela can thumb wrestle for the middle seat, otherwise we will have start stacking bodies up on top of each other. I don't mind but that might be my limit. If anyone drops out I'll post any availability...

  • corie c.

The ride with cliff sounds like a fun time. i am in!

    March 17, 2012

  • cliff

I still have the middle seat in the back. IF you don't mind being snug with the others, you can ride with us. And if you don't mind the rocking out...

Hi all, I'm definitely interested in going but this will be my first time, so not sure if i need any kind of gear. You said water, food and we will get dirty, so I'm assuming we shouldn't wear white jk. any carpools left from target to the caves, I can share gas.

    March 17, 2012

  • Bizzy ".

LOL,@Cliff, you just got into trouble here - fun conversation/singalongs - to say that we're quite good at that will be an understatement :) Hope you have a good collection of heavy dance beat music because we'll start dancing in the car! Thanks so much, by the way.

    March 17, 2012

  • cliff

Ok, I have Li, Hema and Leda, right? No prob at all. Don't worry about gas. Just provide fun conversation/singalongs and we will call it even.

Hema, it got better, so now we have one extra sleeping hour. I hope the weather cooperate that day, because IF it is raining I will be out too.

    March 16, 2012

  • Li

Hema, thanks! No problem. I can drive up to target and squeeze in someones car. Cliff, how about I book a spot in your car, if you go to target?

@Li, not sure if you saw my earlier comment about seeking a ride from my area. For now, I'm carpooling up to the Target parking lot meeting point with Leda and then hoping to carpool to the mud caves with whoever has space in their vehicle. This is also my first adventure with this group and to the mud caves :) However, if the forecast for that day is showers/rain, then I'll be signing out.

    March 16, 2012

  • Li

Cliff, is it a bit too far for you to come to CV, I guess?

Hema, did you have a spot open? I can share gas wi you. : )

    March 16, 2012

  • cliff

I'll be driving down from Murrieta/Temecula area. Let me know if anyone needs to be picked up...

    March 16, 2012

  • cliff

If my Honda Accord can make it in, I'll take people. Been wanting to do this one for a long time. Thanks Jim!

    March 16, 2012

Be carefull if it starts to rain. Forecast calls for rain even at Borrego Springs (not certain about Arroyo Tapiado).

  • Li

oh, since it's mud adventure, my 1st time. Any suggestion on what to wear? What type of shoes or pants? Should we all tie our hair up?
