Turkey Day at Joshua Tree

Hey Everyone,

We are going to attempt to turn a traditional holiday dinner into something a little bit more adventurous. Yep, we are going to take turkey, some fixin's, and pumpkin pie, then throw in some rock climbing, exploring, and a little Chasm of Dooming. Mix it up and voila' you have the first annual NCA JTree Turkey Day Extravaganza. Well, it probably won't be that awesome, but it should be pretty cool.

The plan is that Tom Horn will be leading the climbs and setting anchors for us. He is highly qualified and I trust him wholeheartedly. He is not doing this as a paid professional, but a donation of $100 per person (for equipment and stuff (wink) ) for all three days, if you plan on climbing, would be sufficient. We will also be checking out The Chasm of Doom (check out the video) at night, as well as exploring the rest of the park.

We have campsites reserved from the 22nd through the 25th. Carpooling is strongly encouraged since there are only 2 parking spots per site. We can also carpool from the entrance if needed.

*Note - If the event is full, rsvp anyway, since I will be opening up slots as climbers sign up.

The dinner will be pretty much pot luck and we will just wing it as best we can. I will share more details as the date gets closer. So, check it out, sign up, and I will see you out there!

Jim

P.S. Special thanks to Trisha for taking the lead, getting the campsites, and kicking my butt to get this going.

Yup, still going. I'll bring homemade pumpkin/butternut squash soup and pie. Would like to come out on Thursday and need a ride. If need be I can drive but my Jeep is old and a gas hog - would rather go with someone else and split the gas :-)

Anyone have an idea as to when we might be doing dinner tomorrow? I was thinking about setting up camp and then going into the main park to go through the chasm of doom before dinner if anyone else is interested.....

I'm thinking we might want to do dinner early, since it will be dark and possibly cold after 5:00. Anyway, we can throw it out there.

Hi, I'm on the waitlist... My boyfriend and I would love to come out and camp with y'all for Thanksgiving. Are there any more spots available?

Does anyone want to carpool from San Diego? My friend Trasie is interested. Call/text at[masked] thank you!

Would anyone like to carpool? I can drive my Jeep Cherokee, plenty of room for gear. I am in Laguna Niguel. If so, you can leave your car here at my place.....

We (2-3 Families) plan to be there only on Thursday, with kids + dog. Will be fun if some of us could hop on for some activity.

"Campsites are limited to six people, three tents, and two cars (a vehicle towing a trailer, popup, tent trailer, fifth wheel or a motorhome pulling a vehicle is considered two vehicles). Each campsite has a picnic table and fire grate. Water and flush toilets are available in Black Rock and Cottonwood campgrounds. Showers are not available."

Looks like there is a maximum of (3) tents per site (so 6 total) and actually only 12 people (perhaps it won't matter just fyi) so we should figure out who will be there on what days. I have a (2) person tent and I maybe bringing a guest so I'd like to keep it that way if at all possible. Brandi has the Taj Mahal of Tents from what I remember. Last year Tom camped in his car. Jim & his son shared a tent.

Trisha, I agree. Carpooling and bunking up are at premium.

I'm going to bring Apple Sausage stuffing (reheat on the firepits) for everyone and I'll probably bake a cake or two. :) I'll bring some beer, too.

    August 19, 2012

    • Trisha

The dates of the trip are Thursday, November 22 - Sunday, November 25. One of the campsites will be reserved from Wednesday, November 21 - Sunday, November 25 though. Both Mark and I were planning to arrive on Wednesday night.

Mark is not going anymore. I will arrive on Thursday, too, most likely.

If more people plan on attending, let me know and I'll reserve another campsite. There are also at least two of us that plan to do the Joshua Tree Traverse (37+ mile run) so that may be a fun option for some of you on one of the days.

    August 24, 2012

    • Trisha

The JTree traverse will not happen because I don't want to run it alone.

ok, are climbers coming for just the day? otherwise i would need all camping gear?

      October 4, 2012

    • Jim H.

Hey Sarah, I would say the climbers are going for the entire weekend.

Would anyone mind if I brought a dog along? (I'm familiar with the park rules for pets)
