After the herons have migrated south, Geauga Parks occasionally hosts an interpretive hike to the rookery that has existed in this location for 70-100 years.
Our group is meeting early for a short loop hike before the guided hike begins at 3:30. We will then join the large group to be led to the rookery area (which is off-trail and not generally open to the public) via the trail of a former interurban railway track. After the presentation, our group can continue to the end of the rail trail before returning about a mile to the parking lot. [Due to the time change, the sun will be setting an hour earlier, so we can decide when the time comes.]
Total hiking: 3.5-4 flat miles; easy pace. Hard-packed dirt trail + off-trail terrain. Could be muddy.
DIRECTIONS: The Rookery can be reached by taking Rockhaven Road off either Mayfield or Fairmount Road, then turning west on Cedar Rd. and driving to the park entrance.
