Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

How do I join Northern Ireland Young Walkers (NIYW)?

  • Click on the Join Us button.
  • You will be required to create a meetup username / password. Meetup is a global network of clubs and societies (including many in N.Ireland) which NIYW use to host our club website.
  • After confirming your new meetup account via email. You will then need to fill in and submit our short joining questionnaire. After submitting this your application will be sent to our Membership Secretary.
  • Our Membership Secretary will then approve you application, note this may take a few days.
  • Upon receiving your email confirmation, you will then be able to login to the NIYW meetup site and have access to the full site content including access to and ability to R.S.V.P to all upcoming walks

Note, Access to the web site does not constitute full NIYW membership. New members are allowed to complete 2 initial walks free, to try out the club and see if it's for you, after which we require members to pay their annual membership, this can be done using the paypal secure pay online link on the right side banner or via a walk leader on a walk. This ensures members are covered by our 3rd party liability insurance ( for individual personal insurance see the FAQ below).

Before walking with us you must complete and sign a membership registration form (even if you are just trying out). This form can be downloaded from the Meet Up site ( NIYW Membership Form.pdf ) and brought with you on your first walk or alternatively a form can be obtained from the walk leader and completed prior to your first walk.

This form requires full contact details and also highlights issues of personal liability and medical conditions. You will also be expected to complete an ICE (I)n (C)ase of (E)mergency card (obtained from membership Secretary / walk leaders) , outlining your emergency details, which should be carried at all times in your rucksack.

Note: membership of the club is open to people of 18 years or over.

How much is annual membership to NIYW?
The membership fee for 2013 is £25.00. This is agreed annually at the club AGM. The membership year runs from January to December.

What does the membership money go towards?
Membership fees contribute towards the cost of club equipment, financial administration, printing, member training, third party insurance, charity donations and also includes affiliation to the Ramblers Association through the Ulster Federation of Rambling Clubs.

Note: £5 of each membership fee is donated to the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team

Does membership provide any discount opportunities?
Yes - when issued with your membership card, this can be used at a variety of retailers to obtain discounts on clothing and equipment. (See Club Discounts)

How fit do I need to be to walk with NIYW?
A good level of fitness is required before you walk with us, even on our easy or moderate walks. All new members are encouraged to start on an easy to moderate walk and must not attempt a strenuous walk until they have a good idea of their own fitness levels, terrain conditions and the pace of the group. The walk description and grading will give a good indication however of what you can expect. If you are unsure please contact the walk leader for more advice.

What clothes, footwear, food or equipment will I need to bring with me?
Full details are outlined in the walk participation advice and conditions page. This highlights all you need to know to prepare yourself for walking with the club. Please comply with everything outlined so that you have a safe and enjoyable walk.

How do I get to the walks?
Whenever feasible, please use the Meet Up site to link in with other walkers in your area in order to car share. If you need assistance with transportation to a walk please let the walk leader know and they will try to arrange with other members. If car sharing, it is a good practice to give some monies towards fuel costs.

Am I insured to walk with NIYW?
No - members participate voluntarily and at their own risk with the understanding that there is an element of danger in hill walking and that they are not insured by the club. Members are therefore advised to consider personal travel insurance or private medical care policies in the event of an accident overseas or at home. It is also the individual’s responsibility to make sure that any serious medical conditions / injuries are known to the walk leader in order to prevent problems arising.

Can I bring my dog with me on a NIYW walk?
Unfortunately, no. Most of our walks are unsuitable for dogs, due to walking restrictions within the Mournes / Antrim Hills / Sperrins and livestock considerations. Additionally on more strenuous walks / scrambling it is vital that you are looking after yourself.

Are there toilet facilities available on walks?
Whilst we do endeavour to start and finish our walks at places with nearby toilets, there is no guarantee that these facilities will be available as the majority of walks take place in remote, rural settings. You may have to go back to basics!

Is NIYW all to do with walking?
Although our primary focus is walking we regularly run social events and all our members are invited to attend to get to know each other better.

Can I become a walk leader?
We encourage anyone who wants to lead a walk do so. Whether you already have experience or want to learn we can help you to do so. Sometimes we can even do practice walks to help you learn. Please don't hold back in this case. Let one of the walk leaders or the walk secretary (Jenni) know that you want to be involved / learn more and we will help you to do so. We will never leave you to do something that you are uncomfortable with and very often in bad weather walk leaders are there to help one another.

How many free walks do I get?
When you join the first two walks are free, if you wish continue and walk again with the club then you are required to pay the membership fee before the third walk starts. Note the two free walks applies only to new members in their first year, it does not apply to existing members each year or walks/weekends away which have a note requiring payment (you must be a fully paid member for these).

When and how do I pay?
For new members, payment is required before the third walk starts. For existing members, payment is required at the start of each year and is not dependant on the number of walks. It is preferred that you pay online using the ‘Pay Online’ link on the home page. You can also give payment to the Walk Leader or a Committee Member.

What happens if I do not pay as required?
The committee monitor attendance and payment records. The committee reserve the right to contact individuals with lapsed payment to request payment and take other actions as appropriate including refusal to attend a walk or removal of membership.

Can I bring guests on walks?
You are welcome to bring guests for one walk each. If they would like to walk again with the club they must become a member of the online NIYW Meetup group. Guests must complete the Membership Form before the walk starts.
