NKY Group began trail-building at Morning View Heritage Area in fall 2016. This is a new 213-acre nature preserve in SE Kenton County, just west of the Licking River, with a gravel parking lot just south of 15168 Decoursey Pike (KY-177) in Morning View KY 40163. The preserve is about 1/2 mile south on 177 from the KY-14 intersection where the Morning View Post Office is. The gravel parking lot has 2 entrances on the WEST side of 177 - the opposite side from the railroad track. Enter the lot and park facing a wood fence with a restored black barn behind it.
We’ll walk older trails, do routine trail upkeep as needed, then veer onto a new trail. We’ll trim last year’s new sections then begin clearing recently scouted extentions along the ridge. When done, the new trail will be a 1+mile loop hike between the creek and the south ridge. This trail service will cover over 3 miles in upto 4 hours in woods, fields, hills and stream valleys, with climbs & descents upto 190’ each. We’ll carry light tools as we hike, working and walking at a moderate-to-light pace. NKY Group has tools for upto 5, so bring extras if you can, like clippers, weed whips, loppers, small saws, rakes.
Wear long sleeve tops and pants to protect against thorns. Wear work gloves and sturdy shoes with good treads. Bring your own liquid and snacks. All must sign Sierra Club’s liability waiver and acknowledgement of self-risk. A parent or legal guardian must sign for unaccompanied minors who are at least 13 yrs old. No restrooms. Dogs are not allowed. Trails can be muddy, slippery or tricky. We will be upto an hour hike from our cars.
