Come taste in the pleasant chill of the underground tasting room at Portland Wine Storage. Come and cool down!
BYOB or Just show up to taste.
From it's birthplace in SouthWest France to Argentine vineyards in the shadows of the snow capped Andes, Malbec has swept to prominence in the wine world. At this meetup we will taste a wide spectrum of Malbecs to get a handle on this grape.
I will be bringing 2 Malbecs from Cahors in SouthWest France to put up against the Argentines. Come taste the difference between Old and New world Malbec.
Call it Auxerrois, Côt Noir, or Pressac, it's the all the same, Malbec. The grape is indigenous to western France. Little known, Malbec is actually one the 6 grapes allowed to be blended into Bordeaux. It was planted widely in Bordeaux until the horrible 1956 frost. After that it was replanted in Cahors SW France but not Bordeaux.
In Argentina, the grape was brought over in the 1870s and was widely planted, especially in Mendoza. The Argentine Malbecs tend to be less tannic, and more fruit forward.
$5 if you bring a bottle $10 to just taste. We will put the fees in a pot and the winner (whoever brings the best rated bottle will take home the pot (Minus food expense). Blind Tasting.
Meat and Cheese plates provided.
Great Value event, the last 4 times, everyone got their fill, and the winner took home money for bringing the best wine.
Once again, whoever brings the best wine (Blind rated), will take home the pot. If we get 10 people to show, the after expense pot should be at least $50, Last week the winner took home $95.
We will taste blind and rate using the Robert Parker 100 point system.
Think you know Malbec? Bring a bottle and let's find out. If you bring the best bottle, you will go home with the winnings. Last time the winner took home $95, week before the pot was $80.
Starts at 7PM, but feel free to show up early, I always have a bottle or 2 open.
