Opt Out on Black Friday in the Crabbiest Way

Location image of event venue

Let's opt-out for Black Friday!

This will be a three day, post-turkey event. Weather permitting, we'll hike, paddle, and (hopefully) eat lots of crab. In the event of unfavorable weather we will just camp, play cards, and otherwise opt-out.

We've reserved two bay-front sites at Doran Beach to use as a base of operation. Reserve now for both trailer sites and tent camping sites at Doran: http://parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/Play/Camping/Reservations/

Camp sites are also available at Sonoma Coast State Beach, the Bodega Dunes and Wrights Beach campgrounds are the closest. These will be reserve-able six months in advance (i.e., next May) at https://www.reservecalifornia.com/CaliforniaWebHome/

A word to the wise: the Sonoma Coast is known for its deadly surf. Please use extreme caution, stay away from waters edge, and never turn your back on the ocean.

Campsite Check-in is at 2pm.

We'll setup camp, share an optional, early no host dinner at the Tides, and then (hopefully) enjoy the sunset on the beach, just steps away from our campsite!

Our agenda for the day depends entirely upon the weather and the tides. HEAVY WINDS OR BIG WAVES CANCEL PADDLING.

THE PLAN: Crabbing at Doran Regional Park--either from the jetty or with kayaks--followed by a sumptuous crab potluck in camp. NOTE: there is a separate day use fee for Doran Park and anyone fishing from a kayak will need a valid California Fishing License.

Plan B: Paddle the Russian River. This can be a fun paddle… any length we want.

Plan C: Paddle Estero Americano: We will meet at the launch point at 10:00. Distance is approx. 9 miles round trip to the ocean and back—which might be ambitious given the tides.

Plan D: Enjoy a day of exploring or just hanging out at the beach.

For any of these events bring water, lunch and snacks, and dress in layers, bring a change of clothes, and, if paddling, be prepared for immersion.

IF YOU ARE SIGNING UP TO PADDLE, YOU MUST COMPLY WITH ALL THE OBNDY GUIDELINES AND REQUIREMENTS. This means that a Coast Guard approved PFD--zipped and properly fastened--is REQUIRED for EVERY paddle.

Check out is at noon.

For possible après-checkout activities check Saturday’s options. We can work out a Sunday activity once we are at the beach and can assess the weather and conditions. I plan to stay until Monday, so if anyone would like to stay and that extra day, please let me know.
