Khachaturian Adagio from Spartacus and Phrygia
    Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2
    Mussorgsky Prelude to Khovanshchina
    Shostakovich Symphony No. 6

A model of Soviet composition, Khachaturian's heroic ballet is best known now for its ardent love theme. Passions run high, too, in Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto whose majestic opening sets the scene for sweeping melodies and muscular virtuosity from Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition winner, Freddy Kempf. Mussorgsky's unfinished Opera Khovanshchina was inspired by an attempted rebellion, but it's just the short and evocative prelude, that is known now. Here it provides the calm before the warring emotions of Shostakovich's 1939 Sixth Symphony, with the dark and brooding first movement a stark contrast to the apparently breezy conclusion, parodying Stalin's demand for light and boisterous finales.
