What we're about

Our intention is to make this a very sociable group across the East Midlands but based around healthy and fun activities not just going to the pub.

Evening and daytime local shorter walks and longer weekend walks in the Peak District, Lake District, Snowdonia, Yorkshire Dales and other UK National Park areas.

Bike rides, kayaking, watersports, climbing and other outdoor and indoor pursuits.

Weekends away and longer breaks in the countryside and UK cities and abroad.

Music gigs and concerts, theatre trips, dancing and other cultural pursuits locally and further afield.

Yes, we will go to the pub as well with a monthly Club Night and a variety of meals out and party nights.

Our group and all its activities are operated on a not for profit basis and event and group organisers receive no income from any activities run by the group.

That's us!

Note: Some of our events will be shared with two associated Meetup groups in the Peak District and West Midlands.

Awesome Skye in June

SYHA Glenbrittle Hostel

The month of June is the ideal time to visit the amazing Isle of Skye on the Scottish West Coast when the weather is as good as it gets, the days are long and the midge numbers have not yet risen to their July/August intensity. Our plan is to stay at Glenbrittle in the heart of the Cuillin Mountains with some awesome scenery which you can either enjoy from easier paths lower down or tackle the peaks themselves for some of the most fantastic and scary walking, scrambling and climbing in the UK. Tackling the so called Inaccessible Pinnacle won't be everybodys glass of malt but if some are up for it, I am sure we can find a local guide willing to take them. Lots of walks at every level including coast, forest and the Cuillin Ridge or parts thereof. Something for everyone. Also of course, the chance to stay on in the area and make a longer break of it. If you can travel up Thursday and maybe stay overnight in Invergarry/Fort William you can get an extra days walking in Friday, otherwise we meet at our remote hostel near to the well known Fairy Pools on Friday Night. Saturday some can do an easier coastal / forest walk whilst those of sterner stuff tackle Sgurr Dearg which is a fantastic viewpoint, as well as being one of the most dramatic spots on the Cuillin ridge, being overtopped by the famous and incredible Inaccessible Pinnacle. This circuit visits the base of the pinnacle but does not include the ascent! The route involves fairly straightforward scrambling but has difficult route finding so although not long in distance we will be taking our time. Sunday and Monday easier walks for some but some real toughies for those who feel the need. Here are some of the proposed routes planned so far:- www.biznetuk.org.uk/gMaps/skye2019 An amazing spot. Due to the very prompt response of a lot of people in the group, we have been able to now secure exclusive occupancy of the Glenbrittle SYHA for the Friday to Monday period above and it should be relatively easy for people to extend their stay individually if that is required. Whilst the initial group of people to book have done so on an accommodation only basis I have had to adjust the price for the last few bookings to balance up the financial numbers, but this is on a fully catered basis for which the initial bookers will pay an extra charge later. The cost for the three nights including 3 x cooked breakfasts 3 x pack yourself lunches and 3 x dinners, 3 nights accommodation and of course walks Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday is now £149 which needs to be paid when you book. We regret that if you have the need to cancel later we can only refund you if the event is otherwise full and we can re-sell your place when a 15% cancellation/administration fee would be charged. The event is still a bargain and we are confident is going to be great for all those taking part. Transport for such a far away location is of course an additional issue especially as some people will be wanting to arrive earlier / leave later than others. To facilitate maximum lift sharing we have set up a message board for this where you can request or offer lifts (expecting to share costs). We should also be able to co-ordinate pickups from Fort William or more local public transport destinations if appropriate. The link for the message board is as follows:- https://www.meetup.com/peak-district-meetup-group/messages/boards/thread/51789782/

Dartmoor Walking, Cycling & Mountain Biking Bank Holiday Long Break

Okehampton Activity Centre / YHA

Although of course we are principally a walking group sometimes we need to ring the changes and come up with weekends away which are a bit different. We hope this fits that bill! The Okehampton Activity Centre which is also a YHA is a fabulous spot for walking, road/trail cycling, mountain biking and horse riding and many other outdoor pursuits. We have therefore booked part of the Centre for our exclusive use over August Bank Holiday Long Weekend next year and plan to offer most of these if we can. You can bring a bike if you need one but these can be hired on site. We'll set up the horse riding option at a later date. Whilst there are some more advanced mountain bike rides available, for those who want something a bit less challenging there are 4 or 5 excellent circular trail rides from Okehampton of 20 or 30 miles including the some incorporating spectacular new Granite Way which has recently been completed. For walkers there is one of the largest undeveloped land areas in the UK. In some months of the year you have to put up with a variety of military training areas, with live fire, which can be a little uncomfortable but you will be pleased to know this does not happen in the month of August! That's a relief. So assuming we have our usual bonus walk AND an alternative bike ride available on the Friday you'll have four glorious days of outdoor heaven where you can ride a bike (or a horse) or go off on a selection of spectacular walks. Dartmoor is not boring or flat! Trust me. May even be some kayaking available as well. As is usual on our weekends all of the food is provided other than Friday dinner. Okehampton is easily reached by road or public transport with nearest mainline station being Exeter. Total cost for the long weekend including all food, accommodation and walks is NOW just £69.00 which needs to be paid when you book. This bargain price for our 3 night break will rise by a further £20 when the first twenty bookings have been achieved. Bike Hire, Horsee Riding or Kayaking will incur additional charges. If you have to cancel more than 28 clear days before the event start date you will get a full refund less 15% cancellation fee. If you cancel with less than 28 but more than 14 clear days notice the cancellation fee increases to 50%. No refunds will be provided to those cancelling with less than 14 clear days notice. ("clear" means does not include event start date or cancellation date!)
