Novel Lovers news

I’m looking forward to discussing A Visit from the Goon Squad with you this Sunday, Sept. 25, at Ellen’s. If you’re new (welcome!) and don’t know Ellen’s address, please email me directly at [address removed]. (Don’t click “reply” or all our 52 members will get your email.)

Janet Egan talks about A Visit from the Goon Squad for 48 seconds on YouTube:  The New York Times reviews it here: Note the link from the NYT review to a 10 min. audio interview with Egan, which goes into much more detail than the video.

Important: October 16 is our next meeting, although we don’t have the book title set. I thought there would be more discussion at about novels you’d like to read and discuss, but I guess that isn’t the best way to make these decisions. So that we have our book set for October, I suggest that we read The History of Love by Nicole Krauss (author of Great House, for those of you who have been with us since the beginning, but a shorter and less complex book). It was suggested by several of you at our last meeting, and I personally loved it. There’s much to discuss! It’s available in paperback. Amazon link:

Some of you suggested State of Wonder by Ann Patchett (, so I started reading it, and although I didn’t expect to love it from the description, I can’t put it down. I think this would be a terrific book for our group, but it’s not yet available in paperback, and you’ve made it clear that you’d like that to be a requirement. Do you think we’d be safe scheduling it for November? New York Times review here, FYI:

Speaking of November, we need a new place to meet by then! Ellen has been more than generous, even extending her hospitality through our October meeting, but we do need to have a new meeting place that can accommodate 15 people by November. Several of you were going to investigate possibilities – could you please email me at [address removed] if you have any updates?

Please doublecheck that your RSVP is up to date at I’ll print the badges late Sunday morning, so I’d appreciate your final RSVP by then. I don’t mind if you change your mind a few times between now and then, but please have your final RSVP confirmed by 11 a.m. Sunday.

I think that’s everything!
