Tar Jacket Ridge

This is a very nice hike for a "winter tune up" and for most the last chance to get out into the woods before being totally immersed in the Christmas season.

Complete route descriptions, more details and maps of this hike can be found at http://www.hikingupward.com/GWNF/TarJacketRidge/

This Trip Ranking: Easy/Intermediate:

The Trip: The beautiful views on Tar Jacket Ridge are often overlooked with the spectacular vistas from Mount Pleasant and Cold Mountain just next door. The vista from Tar Jacket Ridge offers views of The Cardinal,The Friar, and The Little Friar.

The Plan:

Day 1 (Friday): We will use our usual carpooling points with the Virginia Beach one being at 6 pm and the Newport News one being at 7 pm. Once we are loaded we will drive to Everyday Cafe in Charlottesville for something to eat and to pick up any last minute supplies. We will then proceed to the Log Camp Gap parking area, which is just off of the AT.(Rt 60 East out of Buena Vista, turn left on Coffeytown Road (RT 634), Turn right on Wiggins Spring Road (RT 755), follow to marked AT crossing)

There is an orchard/pasture (Kitty-Evenstar's Meadow) where we will set our tents up Friday night adjacent to the parking area. Don't forget your headlamps. The parking lot is just next to the field where we will camp, so you will have access to cars if you want to plan something special for breakfast.

There is a small spring several hundred meters from Kitty's Meadow, but I find it much easier to bring water (in the car) for Saturday breakfast and on the trail. I think about 1.5-2 liters of water should be enough for walking on Saturday. There is at least one stream crossing where additional water can be filtered.

Day 2 (Saturday): Once we have had breakfast we proceed north on the AT. There should be some excellent views along the ridge. We will find one of those views for lunch somewhere at the halfway point. We will make camp at the Seeley Woodworth Shelter. There is a piped spring and privy at the shelter. Total mileage for Saturday is about 7 miles. There is the option of sleeping in the shelter.

Day 3 (Sunday): After breakfast, we have the option of taking the Lovingston Spring Trail (blue blaze) south from the shelter until it intersects with the AT and then continue south on the AT to Hog Camp Gap.

We have many options for a post-hike feast; Waynesville has a new Plaza Azteca, there is also a very good pizzeria in Charlottesville, next to the UVA campus, the "Mellow Mushroom".(http://www.mellowmushroom.com/charlottesville/menu#/store/menu/charlottesville) I highly recommend it! A huge single pizza and drink runs under $15.

What To Bring: Nothing is provided for you. You are responsible for all gear and food you need for the weekend. If you have questions on what to bring feel free to email me. Water: You do need to bring water. We will have a piped spring at the shelter Saturday night, and there are several creeks where water can be purified.

Weather: Check the weather for Buena Vista, VA

Dogs: No problem.

Carpool: Carpools are always organized in advance, if you have RSVP'ed yes you will receive an email a week in advance to help us organize rides. Please keep an eye out for this email.

Medical: Please remember to print off a copy of the medical form, fill it out, and place it in a ziplock and put it in your pack. I will only need to access your information in the event of an emergency. If you have questions about it please contact me.

RSVPing: There is a wait-list set up if we do exceed the max number of hikers allowed on this trip. So please don't get discouraged if you're on the wait-list, no matter how far down the list you are.

No Shows/Last Minute Cancellations: We do keep track of no-shows and last minute cancellations. If you make this a habit we will start removing you from trips to allow wait-listers your spot.

A great weekend hike, good views, rolling hills with varied scenery. Plenty of water at the hut; no bear issues; great campfire, lots of laughs and conversation. Wonderful group.

Do you have an estimation of when you will be at the trailhead?

    December 3, 2012

    • Mark U! ՟՜ ҉ ☺.

I would say closer to 11 or 11:30 later, we usually get to the cafe at 10.

I love that area! We started at the Vallecito Reservoir and worked our way to Molas lake near Silverton. Always plenty of stories hiking in those mountains.

Unfortunately I have to attend a meeting on Friday evening. Would still love to join you Saturday morning if possible, but would hate to drive alone. Does anyone from Norfolk/VA beach area want to carpool early Saturday morning? Please let me know. I could drive or maybe someone driving already and I could join? Thank you.

Hey David! Reference carpools; I'll send an email to everyone, probably on 2 Dec, to see who can drive and who will ride, then try to match everyone up; and then change it all up again when peoples schedules start to change, ;-)

Phil, you have to send me those two pictures. They are awesome. I'd love to have them. I wish I could go that weekend. You have such a great group going too. That was such a memorable trip last year. :)

    November 24, 2012

  • Phil

Yea! To paraphrase Hank Williams, Jr. " all my rowdy friends are going camping tonight!" If we get Marie, Big Bill, Hardrock, Squirrel, Gunny, Sandi, etc. we'll have a good old fashioned Christmas Party in the woods!

    2 · November 24, 2012

    • Marie

Well Phil I don't know if that's a compliment but .. . let me work on my ex and see if we can switch some weekends around! Or I guess I can just lock them in the hall closet with a bottle of water?? I do miss all of you and drinking around the fire while freezing my ass off!

      November 24, 2012

  • Rodney

    This'll be a fun one!

    November 24, 2012

  • Mark U! ՟՜ ҉ ☺.

this looks like your favorite hike, how many times have you been there this year?

    November 23, 2012

    • Phil

Ha! It's just that it's easy to get to, pretty level, and almost looks like any hike in GWNF!

      November 23, 2012

    • Phil

let's see, last January (pix above); planned one for May but had to bail; then in October? for the leaf colors; all the hikes are repeating now.. are you coming?

      November 23, 2012

  • Marie

ok that's it -- I'm selling my kids!

    1 · November 23, 2012

but not too me! ;-D, just got rid of my last one!

      November 23, 2012

  • Jennifer B.

Is it ok if I meet you at the trailhead. I live in Salem and would travel straight up 81.

    1 · November 23, 2012

    • Phil

      of course!

      November 23, 2012

  • Billy

What time do you guys expect to return Sunday? Just 7 miles Saturday? more or less planned for Sunday?
    billy

    November 23, 2012

    • Phil

Hi Billy. 7 miles out & 7 miles back to the trail head. For the more motivated, there is a side trip to spyglass rock, about another 1.5-2 miles beyond our destination, which some people add to take photographs. It's getting dark about 5ish, so that's problematic.
