Help us to understand the experience level of our members. This will enhance the safety and planning of events. Are you new to backpacking or do you consider yourself an experience backpacker? About how long have you been backpacking?

My first real backpacking trip was to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. The last trip was with OC Backpackers from Daleville to Bryant Ridge Shelter in 2016. It was great!

Do you currently have all the equipment you need for a backpacking trip? i.e. backpack, boots, sleeping bag, stove, tent, cooking stuff, clothing, etc. etc., etc.?

Yes except my stove caught fire in a trial run at Hog Camp Gap last week. Update - Johnson Outdoors replaced my stove!

When was the last time you went backpacking? Where did you go? How many nights were you on the trail?

Have backpacked one night in the Grand Canyon in 2012, one night in the Smokys 40 years ago, and 32 miles on the AT in Central VA in 2016.

What is the longest backpacking trip you have been on (number of days/nights)? Where?

3 nights, 32+ miles, 30 pounds on the AT. No rain, great people!

Do you know how to read a topographic map? Do you own and know how to use a compass? Do you own and know how to use a GPS?

Yes, I can read a topo map. I own a compass and generally know how to use it. I don't own a GPS. I did take a class/hike with one at the ATC biennial in 2015 but would not be able to get myself in or out of an area using one!

What Allison R. is saying about this Meetup Group

I really liked the group. It was mixed - beginners, experienced, male, female, young and old. I learned a lot.
