Just to be clear... do you want winter tips HERE or sent to you via message?

Winter Tip: always pack a one bedroom cozy cabin... with a fireplace!

Hey Guys, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

First a big WELCOME! to all our new members, don't be shy, go on a trip!  They're supposed to be fun and about meeting new friends!

The people who run BIG Meetup have made the sites ridiculously confusing with their constant tweaking.

There used to be a check box I could check to allow anyone to post a trip, which I cannot find now (If anyone knows where it is, please let me know).

So if you're having trouble posting a new trip, contact me and I'll make you a trip organizer.

For years I have left on the PAY DUES item to allow members to make VOLUNTARY I ran across a feature under dues that is telling folks you'll be removed it you don't pay dues with a certain time frame.  Well, I believe I have turned that off and turned on feature that 'let's members make contributions'.  Be advised BIG MEETUP takes $1.25 from each contribution for themselves.

We have about $600 in the bank, that's enough for about 3 yrs of dues to BIG MEETUP.  The dues are $90 every 6 months and are on my credit card.  I pay the dues then reimburse myself from the our own bank account (1st Advantage Credit Union) (you're welcome!)

Ok, now let's talk about backpacking for a minute.

Except for a few drastic spurts, winters are becoming much milder here in the south east.  This means we no longer need the 4 season tents and zero bags (with exceptions of course).  That means it's become less expensive to get equipped and easier to get to trail-heads (less snow).

Winter can be an amazing time to go backpacking!  1. you don't get all sweaty 2. fire wood is much easier to find 3. Views!  With the leaves down, you can actually see the mountain sides and terrain as you walk in the forest. 4.  You're not going as far because it get dark so much earlier 5. No bugs, snakes or poison ivy!

On the down side, you need a lot of down (pause); packs will be a little heavier due to the all the extra coats and stuff we need to stay warm.

Anyway....I think we need a laundry list of tips on how to stay warm, especially for those planning their first winter hike.  Please send me your tips/lessons learned and I'll compile them.  You can put them in the new 'start a conversation' block that BIG MEETUP unilaterally inserted into the middle of the screen, or send me an email, or use our FACEBOOK GROUP PAGE (  So sit down and send me those tips!  DO IT, DO IT NOW! (in my best Arnold voice bubble) :-)

best regards and Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays!
