Let's eat, drink, and theologize!

Super excited about getting together again! I can't make the last week in June, and I figured we should avoid July 3. So July 10 it is. Let's do Stonewood again. I'm going to suggest two topics - when you RSVP, chime in on which one you think we should discuss (or suggest your own):

(1) Denominations? Good or bad? Necessary or no? What's your experience?

(2) Physical vs spiritual - What's the difference? Why does it matter (pun intended)? Is one better than the other?

See you soon,

Ed

Was fun everyone. Art, here is a Christianity Today article on the Assembly of God in Provo, UT that I was a member of. This was the pastor who married me to my husband: http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2000/february7/7.66.html?paging=off

Tom, here are C. Michael Patton's definitions of "complementarianism" vs. "egalitarianism" (he is comp himself, but I think the definitions are fair)

    http://www.reclaimingthemind.org/blog/2010/12/three-questions-for-egalitarianism/

I am a member of Christians for Biblical Equality (egalitarian). This was my article on the NIV-2011 update: http://www.cbeinternational.org/files/u1/free-art/2011-NIV.pdf

    See you all next month!

Ok now you've got my curious. I will definitely try to make it in August.

Also, if I could suggest a topic of conversation for August... Book of Job.. most frustrating book of the Bible or what?

I can't make it because my car needs to spend some time in the shop, but I look forward to meeting you all at the next meeting.

Bummed I can't make it as both of these topics are good ones on which I have opinions (I always have opinions), but I'm triple booked this Thursday.

I thought it was funny. Have you ever met a German teetotaler?Spot on about the dominating voices, too.

Hi Jim, My comment was meant in part as a joke. I don't really have strong feelings on the matter. But if serious argument must be serious...

I find that in most large group settings, 2-3 voices dominate the conversation while the rest are predominantly silent. In coed settings, it's women who speak far less than men. A group setting where people are coupling off into groups of 3-4 due to logistics (noise level of the location, proximity to other party members, etc.) can be the perfect setting for allowing otherwise taciturn members to speak. On a personal level: I went to a college that didn't allow alcohol, didn't start drinking until my late 20s, and kind of want to get better at it. So, the idea of a pub appeals to me. Finally, as Ed said, the name of the group is "Theology PUB." Complaining about the "pub" part is a bit like complaining that *The Exorcist* has an exorcist in it.

If you're still coming to the pub, I look forward to meeting you!

I think we should keep it at the pub. WWMLD? (What Would Martin Luther Do)

    1 · July 7, 2014

  • Ed T.

I don't mean to be unresponsive or dismissive of noise concerns, but I have no intention of changing this from a theology "pub" to a theology "coffee shop" or theology "froyo" - I believe it is part of the essence/draw of this meet-up that it is what it claims to be. We know where Jim and Art stand. Do any of the rest of you have strong opinions on this matter?

I will be about 20-30 minutes late. I am coming straight from yoga class in Rolling Meadows.

I like them both. Maybe mild preference for denominations.

I am in favor of denominations (as the topic of discussion, that is)

I like both discussion ideas. Number 1 in July and number 2 in August?

I don't have any preference for either one.
