• Will social media regulation curtail free expression online?

Concerned about Government proposals to regulate social media platforms (and social media users)? Curious about the current state of digital censorship in the UK? Then join us in Oxford for an evening with Open Rights Group executive director Jim Killock as he reviews new Government plans to address “online harms” from bullying to terrorism, and how it could impact your right to free expression online. We’ll also discuss how you can make your voice heard by responding to the Government’s public consultation. This is a free event and no experience is necessary. All are welcome! Open Rights Group (ORG) exists to protect your rights in the digital world. We challenge the Government’s mass surveillance programme and stand up to Big Tech’s moves to control your personal data. With over 3,000 supporters across the UK, ORG has local activist groups in cities and towns across the UK.

  • Modern threats to free speech online

    The Oxford Retreat

Could new plans to make Britain "the safest place in the world to be online" have unintended consequences? Hear from campaigns manager Mike Morel, legal officer Alex Haydock, and organiser Deepika Gudavalli about how the Government is pressuring social media companies to police speech online. Learn how heavy fines compel the roll out of not-so-smart filters that can silence free speech, and how murky definitions of 'harmful content' give social media companies unprecedented control over free expression. No experience is necessary to attend this FREE event. All are welcome, please join us!

  • ORG Oxford is BACK!

    Oxford Hackspace

Join us at Oxford Hackspace for a night of lively discussion about protecting human rights in the digital age. We'll be joined by Campaigns Manager Mike Morel who will provide an overview of ORG's current and upcoming campaigns covering mass surveillance, digital privacy, data protection, free speech online, web blocking, automated censorship & more. But this meet up is also about YOU. We want to hear about the digital rights issues most important to you and what you'd like to see ORG do about them. Absolutely no experience is necessary for this FREE event. All you need to bring is an interest in how technology affects society and personal freedom, and a desire to work for positive change. Please try to arrive on time so as not to disrupt the meeting. Oxhack is completely disabled accessible, but please phone 15 minutes ahead on[masked] as access is via a separate entrance. The event is completely FREE but please do RSVP so we make sure to have a chair for you!
