What we're about
Are you an avid reader of science fiction, who does a happy dance every time your favorite woman s/f writer publishes a new book? Then this group is for you, whatever your gender. That means men are welcome!! Does your fiction library contain books and short stories by Margaret Atwood, Elizabeth Bear, Lauren Beukes, Octavia Butler, Nicola Griffith, Elizabeth Hand, Sheri Tepper, James Tiptree (yep, that's a pen name for a woman writer), Karen Travis, Doris Lessing, Liz Williams, Connie Willis, or others? Join this group, which will focus on relatively contemporary female sci-fi writers (c. 1980 to present). We'll meet once a month to discuss one book over dinner. Although I'm based in Oak Park, the reading club will meet in different restaurants in the area, such as Berwyn, Forest Park, Riverside, etc. I realize that there is another sci-fi discussion group, the Western Suburban Science Fiction Club, that also meets in the Chicago western suburbs monthly. I'm not organizing my club to compete with them, but rather to direct reader attention to a group of science fiction writers who have often received short shrift in this male dominated genre: women sci-fi writers. I encourage you to become a member of both groups, Readers of Women Writers of Science Fiction and WSSFBC. I'm a member of the latter as well and don't intend to cancel my membership. Ideally, we can create a dialogue between the two groups, perhaps meeting together once in a while and sharing members.
I look forward to seeing you at our inaugural meeting. Meeting place will be announced in the near future.
