What we're about

This group is for anyone who wants to learn to swing dance! Welcome to all swing dancers: beginners, intermediate dancers, and all Lindy Hoppers in the East Bay Area. We offer beginning and intermediate class series every Tuesday evening along with a social dance after. You can also find out about other swing dances going on in Oakland through this group! We are a community full of awesome people who love geeking out about Lindy Hop and Jazz music. Bring your dance shoes and try something new! We can't wait to see you.

Solo Jazz & Social!

Online event

July All-Levels Series: "Try This One Weird Trick to Improve Your Creativity and Practice Skills!" with Hannah MacKenzie-Margulies To quote DJ Casper “We’re gonna get funky.” In this class, we’ll throw out all the usual rules and patterns. We’ll share our Lindy Hop/Solo Jazz goals and dreams (and if you don’t have any yet, we’ll work on that too) and explore different practice strategies. In the process we’ll expand our inquiry beyond vocabulary and technique to consider body mechanics, groove, history, improvisation, and empathy. Cool, you say, but what are we actually going to do? Exercises may include: step touches for the entire 14:[masked] Newport Jazz Festival recording of Duke Ellington’s band playing Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue, “mirrored” Zoom duets, and creating new jazz steps based on contemporary life. Come ready to laugh, cry, dance like a marmot, and above all, try something new. Afterword, we'll have socials where you can meet new people, listen to music, and learn about the history of lindy hop! Tickets are donation based $1-$30, your choice! Just pay here: https://breakawayswing.square.site/ and you'll get the link.
