What we're about

We are ACTIVE, millennial progressive Vietnamese/API leaders with a shared interest in meeting other active Vietnamese millennials who possess a passion for serving the broader community. We believe that good work can be fun!

Vietnamese people make up the second largest Asian population in Oakland, but where are all the Vietnamese trailblazers and key influencers hanging out these days?

So far, our members represent the following backgrounds:

- Social work & housing

- Software engineering

- Finance Lending

- Research in race and ethnicity

- Education

(Although this meetup aims to bring together people of Vietnamese descent, you do not have to be Vietnamese to participate in the discussion.)

Improve your Vietnameze

Oakland Marriott City Center

I noticed that most folks our age speak limited Vietnamese, but there is interest in improving Vietnamese fluency. If this is you, then check out this event. Prepare a few sentences that describe you (Profession, where you grew up and what you like to do for fun) IN VIETNAMESE!!!! Regular attendees will model an ice breaker activity that Nam introduced to the group called: Wow, Pow, Chow. Wow: a highlight of your week/ weekend Pow: a challenge you faced/ going through Chow: something yummy you ate AGAIN, ALL IN VIETNAMESE! Nerdy? A bit, but I think this could be a great start to getting to know and learn from one another. Believe it or not, but these conversations are quite interactive and take up the entire two hours. Once folks get more comfortable then we can add more prompts and maybe one day even advance to playing games in Vietnamese! One step at a time... If you just want to hang out and just observe then you are obviously still welcome! You'll just be missing out on some quality fun team bonding ;)

Viet Cine- Song Lang

Victoria Theatre

Set in a richly imagined 1980s Saigon, Song Lang is a gritty underworld noir hiding a tender, romantic heart. At the film’s core is the unlikely bond that develops between hunky, brooding Dung (Lien Binh Phat), a tough debt collector for a ruthless loan shark, and Linh Phung (popular V-pop singer Isaac), a charismatic young opera singer for a struggling company that performs cai luong, a modern form of traditional Vietnamese folk opera. The two meet when Dung comes to forcefully collect a debt from the opera troupe, but when their paths cross again, a friendship—and then more—develops, awakening surprising, tender feelings in both men. Their story, too, soon scales operatic heights. With his first feature film, director Leon Le (Dawn, Frameline38) has delivered a rich drama: a smoldering relationship between two apparent opposites—equally uncompromising—set against the backdrop of a gorgeous, fading art form. For his breakout performance, Lien Binh Phat has picked up rising star awards at festivals across Asia. — CHARLES PURDY Trailor: https://youtu.be/L49GREHcJJ4 Get your tickets early at https://www.frameline.org/festival/film-guide/song-lang
