- Collecting Your Memories and Stories
~A WORKSHOP FOR MODERN OBITUARY WRITERS~ *Easy-to-find Meetup in a safe neighborhood*Order food/drink if you like "Don't tell me the moon is shining," said Anton Chekhov. "Show me the glint of light on broken glass." Writers tell, rather than show, when they have too little information. That's why it's helpful to construct a sort of dossier on your obituee before you write. But even if your obituee died young, cradle to grave is a long span to shoehorn into a brief tribute. Where should you begin and end the narrative? What kind of information should you collect before you start, and from where or whom? How do you decide which details belong in your piece? (If you're working on your own obit, the challenge is objectivity and selection, rather than collection, but the process is similar.) This casual, hands-on workshop will explore a fresh, modern approach to obituary writing. Best of all, you can apply the tips and tricks to any sort of descriptive writing you do, from putting together a smart LinkedIn profile to fleshing out the villain in your sci-fi novel.
