Poetry Reading Happy Hour 5 – 7:15 PM
Join Kawika's Ocean Beach Deli on the first Sunday of the month for a Happy Hour Poetry Reading! In cooperation with Left Coast Writers, we’re excited to feature a different local poet each month. On Sunday, August 2nd we’re thrilled to feature Marianne Betterly, poet and Left Coast Writers member! The spotlight reading will be followed by an open mic for other poets to share original work, or even just to read favorite poems aloud. Happy Hour starts at 5pm, and after our featured poet reads for 30 minutes, open mic (three minutes per poet) goes until 7:15 pm. Celebrate creativity and poets while supporting a local, community-oriented, and family owned business!
Wanderland Writers introduces their new WANDERING IN ANDALUSIA anthology
WANDERING IN ANDALUSIA: The Soul of Southern Spain
… The 5th anthology in the prize-winning Wandering series …
It’s interesting that the Wanderland Writers generally tend to head south in their explorations, and nowhere was the southerly route more rewarding than in Andalusia. On this latest adventure, editors Linda Watanabe McFerrin and Joanna Biggar led the writers on a search for the soul of Southern Spain. Along the way they discovered a country ripe with contradiction: an arid landscape filled with lush gardens; the practice of elaborate Christian rituals in churches echoing a rich Islamic past; a land of bullfighters, gypsies, poets, philosophers and scholars; a place where duende and alegría coexist. As they spread out in this inviting territory, they encountered—and wrote about—Columbus and the Christian Monarchs; tapas and toreadors; sherry and sangria; caliphs and communists; flamenco and, yes, flamingos.
“Andalusia is a place where the work of the soul finds a home, where the sensual and the transcendental come together; where experience levers open our understanding, remakes our ideas and hopes, and we see with new vision where prayer and song and stories might lead us.”
—Steven Nightingale, Author of Granada: A Pomegranate in the Hand of God and The Hot Climate of Promises and Grace.
"Wandering in Andalusia’s enchanting collection of travel tales illuminates the region’s history, traditions, and myriad attractions. It's the perfect companion for your next visit to Spain."
—Christi Phillips, Author of The Rossetti Letter and The Devlin Diary

Linda Watanabe McFerrin and Joanna Biggar have floated down the Canal du Midi in France, danced in the sunlight of southern Greece, toasted the best of times in Ireland, devoured the culture and countryside of southern Italy, wandered through landscapes lost and found in Costa Rica, and explored the Indonesian island that is known as an earthly Paradise.
In each destination, they eat and drink, laugh and get lost, explore and expound with their merry band of travel writers. And they always return with a varied collection of tales, some mystical, some funny, some terrifying—each told in a different, highly personal voice.
