Plan Off-Water Winter Activities

Couple of announcements...

There is a $7.00 guest fee at the Rec Center.

You can change into cold water/weather gear at the rec center after the rowing lesson and back to clothes after paddle there too.

We will meet at Berea Rec Center for Rowing Technique and Ergometer Learning session by Gerry Henwood. Rowing Ergometers are available at most rec centers and a great way to condition for kayaking. Then we will cold water paddle on Wallace Lake for one hour. All paddling level yakers are good for this small lake as long as

they have a Farmer John/Jane wetsuit or better. Will finish with a lunch gathering at the Cornerstone Brew Pub Restaurant on the square in Berea to discuss plans for the group. There is a 47.00

    Christine,

I would be interested in possibly attending if I could just work on my rolls and self-rescues as there won't be any place around where I live to practice until maybe Feb of next year.

Byron - If you look under the Suggested tab on the home page there are a bunch of rolling sessions listed. I just put them up today. Should be perfect for what your looking for.

Great idea, Gerry! I cannot make this date, but hope to hook up in the future. I have some pool sessions following ACA Standards for QuickStart Your Kayak Classes being scheduled at Baldwin Wallace soon as well! Happy Paddling!

On my calendar as well. Do we pre-register online or just show up? Do you think BW’s equipment is satisfactory to use? I’d like to do this rather than bring my own kayak.

If you comment here I will take that as your registration! You can pay the fee the day of class. Our equipment is recreational - flatter keel line, wider cockpit, 12 feet long. They are great for learning and mastering the self rescue skills. If you want to truly know how to use your personal equipment then you can bring that instead. Some people don't mind - the biggest difference may be the size of the cockpit being smaller or the stability of the kayak in the water if you have a sea touring kayak being more "tippy" upon re-entry. I believe if you are given the skill set in any equipment you can always adapt it to yours. We have paddle floats, straps, paddles, pfd's and kayaks for your use. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks, looking forward to it! ~Christine

Chris - I read the builders forum you told me to read. Some very good knowledgable kayakers gave feedback. I tried some things with my boat to see how it effected it. I actually liked the set-up better. I would like you to try them on Saturday. Definatly created less rocker and although I didn't have waves I did have 15 to 20 MPH winds and my boat handled it with no issues. I'm not sure your boat will react the same way but judging from the forum I believe it will.

      Ok, see you Saturday!

If anyone is interested in the ACA QuickStart Your Kayak Class I am teaching a class on Wednesday, December 4th 6pm-9pm $10 ACA Fee - location, Baldwin Wallace University Lou Higgins Recreation Center Pool - 136 Bagley Rd.

The fee is $10 for course material and instruction. You can bring all of your own equipment or borrow BW's at no charge. We will cover self rescue techniques and paddle strokes as well as safety issues/topics. We have paddle floats for you to try an unassisted re-entry into your kayak and other equipment as well. This is a great way to figure out what works for you in a controlled environment with lifeguards and clear warmish (81 degrees) water. It's always a good idea to know how you will self rescue if needed and what equipment you need to have with you that works for you and your kayaking buddy! I like to know I have another kayaker that can help me out if I need!!

    Christine,
Can you post to the group when you have the dates and how we register?

Christine, I have another BW class every Tuesday evening, is there any way you could schedule your classes on some night other than Tuesdays?

Gerry's event is on November 16th. I am going to throw out a few dates for the ACA QuickStart Your Kayak Course being taught at Baldwin Wallace University just as soon as we have our activities calendar finalized. It will likely be a couple of Wednesdays in the 6-9pm time frame. I'll know dates later this week.

Thanks Christine. As Barb asked, please suggest the class on this site and we will then post it with dates after you suggest it. Thanks.
