Whiskey Island Wednesdays

Come out to Wendy Park at Whiskey Island to paddle and be with paddlers. Let's build a regular outing where paddlers can be with other paddlers for fun, safety, and to improve their kayaking skills. Destinations will vary depending on paddlers ability. Learners can stay near shore within the breakwall. Experienced sea kayakers can do longer distances and go out on Lake Erie. There are a number of people who are members who do not own a kayak or gear. If anyone has a spare kayak and is willing to share it please let us know and we will make the connections. We're looking into kayak liveries as well. Stand-Up Paddleboarders welcome! Safety in numbers and experience.

Be sure to bring all USCG required gear (PFD, whistle and properly registered boat) as well as any appropriate additional safety gear/clothing for weather/paddle conditions.

Just got home...wish I could have done a half roll then a full roll demo for everyone, because as you all know, I don't mind getting wet! I think I should make it a point to get wet at every paddle, oh yeah, I have been doing that for a long time already!

How was the paddle tonight? What were the conditions?

Sorry again not to make it. In Connecticut today.

Someone who shall remain nameless (co-orgainzer) broke all the new rules and led us out into the big pond. Water was as flat as Lake Erie will ever get when we left. Jumped to 1 to maybe 2 footers right as we started to head back. Interesting to see how fast conditions change on the Lake in a matter of minutes. Very good first night for WIW's.

Flat as a billiard table for most of the night. Little bit of texture as we were heading back.

Looks like we're going to be lucky with the weather tonight. T-storms have blown through, sun is out, forecast is for 8 mi S/SW winds dying down around 6- (at least that's what they're saying right now) so I think we're good to go. Chris- Just be ready to hit the ground running and I'll help you w/ unloading, etc!!!!!

Please remember to all new members: If you have not wet exited your yak and reentered it properly we will not take you out past the breakwall. We have enough people tonight to break into two groups if need be. If you want to try it tonight remember the water is about 54 degrees around Cleveland so dress appropriately. We will be happy to work with you.

I usually like to call the paddle by 2 so people can make other plans. Just checked weather forecast and T-storms are predicted to be done before 7pm and then sunny. Maybe they'll blow through earlier. I vote for holding out a little longer to make decision. Any input?????

I looked at the USCG site and it's unclear what I need as a kayak for required safety gear. In addition to my whistle, do I need a visible (day and/or night ) distress signal?

Thanks, Ryan and Chris - I have most of those things, except the running lights and flares. See you all tomorrow night if there's no lightning!

Polly and I will try and make it, weather-permitting. Wednesday's the only day this week that has a questionable weather forecast, alas.
