Gordon Country Weekend Trip

Gordon Country Weekend Trip

Come along and join us for a great weekend in the south-west corner of the Scenic Rim and Southern Downs. On the way to Gordon Country we will be travelling through gorgeous country site and beautiful Condamine Gorge and cross Condamine River 14 times before heading to the western side of the Great Diving Range to Gordon Country. After spending the night around the camp fire, we will explore the Gordon Country 4WD tracks on Sunday.

Important

The recce is completed now and we had a great time over the long ANZAC weekend.

Please call Sue Gordon now on[masked] for booking and payment. We are at the Platypus camp, just behind the office. Hot showers, flushing toilets and power is available. Sue offered for our group free camping. So, all you have to pay for is the vehicle access permit with $28 and if you wish to connect to power, that's $8 extra.

Please do not enter guest numbers you may bring along into the guest field (leave it 0). We need this field to only show the member in order to determine the number of vehicles. There are 4 questions you need to answer when booking. These questions are about your guests and their age groups. We need this to determine the number of people in each age group.

Meeting point info:

Meet at 8:30 am at the car park behind the Aratula Roadhouse. Upon arrival, please sign in on the trip sheet and pay the $20 trip donation. It is a requirement for everyone attending trips with this group that they sign in and supply contact information for safety reasons including signing the disclaimer.  Further details are supplied relating to this on the day.

At the meeting point prior to the trip departure we will have a pre-trip chat as a group and run through all relevant information relating specifically to the trip to ensure everyone attending is clear on all details about the trip.

Charge your camera for this one, the scenery of the Great Dividing range, gorges, rivers, waterfalls and rain forests of this area are spectacular...

It is recommended that you have a full tank of fuel for our weekend of off-road adventure driving. There is fuel and breakfast at the Aratula Roadhouse. The only supplies are what they sell at the road house. So, ensure you have everything you need prior. You can also refuel at our lunch stop in Killarney.

Terrain info:

Tracks vary in difficulty from easy to medium depending on weather conditions. We will build the weekend around the people and vehicles coming to suit everyone. For some sections there will be an alternative option available to bypass potentially difficult parts. Our trips and adventures are intended to be fun and a positive experience, only take on challenges your happy to take on.

Parts of this trip will be going through a number of river crossings (over one dozen of them). Your vehicle will need to be able to handle about knee deep water. The crossings have a rock base and do not expect there to be any problems (we have checked them all).

Location Info:

Saturday

Saturday will start by leaving our meeting point and heading past Lake Moogerah through beautiful country site and then through the Great Dividing Range and the Main Range National Park. We will soon hit gravel road and air down. We then continue crossing the border twice before we reach the Condamine River with 14 spectacular water crossings.

After travelling through the beautiful Condamine Gorge, we will reach Killarney for our lunch break (toilets, cafe, playground, petrol station available if required). After the lunch break (about 1 hour) we head straight to Gordon Country. We aim to be at the camp site by around 3:00 pm, allowing plenty of time to set-up camp and going for a short afternoon drive, taking on the play area. After returning to the camp, we will start the camp fires and prepare for dinner. Firewood can be collected for free, but would require a chainsaw. Firewood can also be purchased at the office.

Sunday

Sunday is dedicated to exploring the Gordon Country tracks. After breakfast we will leave camp at about 9:30 am and hit the tracks in the mountains to the north. We aim to be back at camp for lunch by 12:30 pm. At about 1:30 pm we will check out some of the tracks in the mountains to the south. We aim to be back at camp by 4:00 pm for packing up.

Dogs:

Dogs are allowed in Gordon Country, so you can bring your best friend. However, as we travel through the Main Range National Park, some restrictions apply. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service have advised me as follows:

Domestic animals are allowed to travel in a vehicle through a national park on a gazetted road only.  The animal must however never leave the vehicle whilst in the park, you cannot leave a gazetted road in the park while driving through it with the domestic animal, and no excrement can be deposited in the park.  It is not permitted to travel with a domestic animal in a vehicle on a non-gazetted road in a park.

We will be travelling on gazetted roads only (confirmed by the Southern Downs Regional Council), but you have to make sure that you comply with the above.

Travelling Times:

Please ensure you check the travel times from your location to the meeting point. You can use e.g. Google Maps to determine travelling times.  Make sure you give yourself plenty of extra time to organise yourself so we don't leave without you.

Some examples for travelling times:

Aspley to Aratula - 1 hour 15 min, 100 km

Brisbane CBD to Aratula - 1 hour, 90 km

Gold Coast to Aratula - 1 hour 45 min, 125 km

Maroochydore to Aratula - 2 hours 20 min, 200 km

Catering:

There will be no catering provided, please bring all food, drinks, camping and cooking equipment you may need.

Minimum vehicle numbers for this trip is: 8

Costs:

The total costs for this trip involve $10 booking donation, $20 trip donation, $28 vehicle access permit, plus an optional $8 fee for power (see details below).

• Camping

The normal tariff is $20 per adult (16 years and older) per night and $10 per child (5 - 15 years) per night. Children 4 years and younger stay free. Sue Gordon offered complimentary camping for or group. So, camping for us will be free. If you wish to connect to power, an $8 fee applies.

• Vehicle access permit

A vehicle access permit will be required for the Gordon Country recreation area. It is $28 for the duration of your stay. For vehicles not using the 4WD tracks at Gordon Country (e.g. if you just accessing to the camping area), the vehicle access permit is $10.

• Trip donations
A voluntary trip donation of $30 per vehicle is appreciated. This is split into 2 parts.

1. A booking donation of $10 per vehicle is required. This must be paid online with Paypal (see link at the top of the page).

2. Upon arrival at the meeting point and signing into the trip sheet, a donation of $20 per vehicle is also appreciated.

(All trip donations & proceeds go towards group expenses)

We do appreciate any donations towards this group, the organisers do work hard on ensuring all trips are safe and fun with plenty of support, however it should not be an expectation of a member that by paying this donation and or attending trips, that the organisers or trip leaders are there at your disposal in the event (but not limited to) there is a vehicle breakdown, vehicle recovery, medical matter or you forgot to bring something (e.g. your favourite pillow), as we are not professionals in this field. The group as a whole will be there to assist where they can. Please read the trip guidelines including safety on trips for more information. All trips are run based on personal experience, ensuring safety and enjoyment are our top priority. We remind all participants on trips that no liability is taken on board by anyone attending the trips.  All advice given is general advice only.

THE OTHER BORING BUT IMPORTANT STUFF

RSVP requirements:

If you are keen to come along on trips please ensure your RSVP is kept up to date at all times. A lot of planning does go into all of the trips and the trip numbers including who is coming is important for us to know. We understand that things can come up at the last minute and you may not be able to make it but please remember that most people and families need time to plan to come on trips and last minute changes do not always allow others to fill your spot. Late pull outs do mean the spot you have taken will be sadly missed by someone else.

Thank you and I hope this helps everyone to enjoy and promote the smooth and safe running of all our trips.

Trip updates:

Please ensure you keep up to date with the trips details as trips can change at any time to accommodate for changing conditions. Make sure your email notifications are set to receive all communication etc. Always double check the trip details before you leave home to travel to the meeting point. Regular trip updates leading up to each trip will keep everyone informed of trip details and conditions. If you have any questions please ensure you post them up.

Trip attendance and itinerary:

For the smooth and safe running of all our trips for everyone attending can you please ensure you adhere to the following. You and any one with you including your vehicle is fully prepared for the trip at the meeting point.  Please be on time at the meeting point as we cannot wait for anyone.   Sign in upon arrival at the meeting point, everyone has to sign in for safety reasons.  Please ensure you stick with the groups itinerary and trip recommendation/requirements throughout the whole trip all the way to the end as trips are planned around this, veering off from the itinerary effects the smooth running and management of trips, any changes by you must be known to the person running the particular trip, (e.g. arriving at camp site a day prior, having to leave early etc etc ...).

Minimum equipment:

All vehicles attending the trip should be fitted with or carry the following equipment:

• CB/UHF radio (handheld Ok)
• Shovel/spade (preferably long handle)
• Fire extinguisher (minimum 0.9 kg)
• First aid kit (including any medication you normally take)
• Snatch strap (rated for you vehicle)
• Rated D shackles x 2
• Recovery blanket
• Gloves (riggers etc.)
• Water (minimum 2 litres per person per day)
• Rated recovery points front and rear (NOT tie down points)
• Jack (suitable for vehicle)
• Wheel brace (suitable for vehicle)
• Base plate for jack (e.g. 300 mm x 300 mm timber)

Recovery and Breakdowns:

Recoveries and breakdowns are your responsibility to manage and can happen from time to time, we recommend to help with that by being a member of RACQ and subscribe to their "Ultimate" roadside assistance package.  It is their top cover and worth every cent.

Everyone attending trips accepts and agrees to the "trip meet up guidelines including safety on trips". This can be found at

Thanks everybody for an awesome weekend. What a great group of people. And even some new faces who did very well and were an excellent fit to the group. Leaving the Gordon Country valley this afternoon heading west towards a beautiful sunset was like the icing on the cake. I will upload my photos next weekend as I am away from work this week. Thanks again everybody and see you again somewhere out there...

    Last Update...
The weather forecast was quite right this time and it looks like we will be lucky enough to have 2 sunny days. See you all in the morning at 8.30am on the car park behind the Shell servo in Aratula. Have a safe drive.

    Hi Dirk,
We are going straight to the camping site on Friday afternoon at this stage and we will not be at the Shell garage on Saturday morning. Is there anything you want done at the site at all? Get the fire pit ready maybe?
We'll fix up the outstanding donation there if that's okay?

    May 22, 2014

    • Sonny B.

Not a problem Dirk. We'll see you guys then. Enjoy your drive.

Once you are set up at camp if you head out of the gate and turn right approx 500m along the road (where the gravel meets the tarmac) there is a large pile of wood off to the left. Will probably need a chain saw though as some of it is quite large

    Trip Update,

the latest weather forecast for the Warwick area looks great, sunny on Saturday and Sunday. It's all go go go...

If you haven't booked and paid for your 4WD access permit yet, please give Sue a call, or pay on arrival. In that case please have the correct amount in cash ready.

Firewood is free, but must be self collected. In case someone has a chain saw, it would be really handy. So, if you don't mind, bringing it along would be great.

I wish you all a good week and hope to see you in Aratula on Saturday morning for a great weekend of 4WDing and camping.

Dirk, any updates on the suitability of off road camper trailers for this trip?

    May 19, 2014

    • Dirk

Ah, sorry. Yes, your trailer will be fine. It's just gravel road and some shallow water crossings. Nothing an off-road trailer couldn't go.

Andrew, Gaile( due to her injured shoulder) will not be coming now but I spoke to Tonieta from Sunshine coast and as she has not a 4 x 4 she asked me if she could come as passenger in my vehicle so she will be leaving her car at my place and will be with me for this trip is that OK, I have also changed my booking to a powered site and will have some lights we can use if needed.

    May 15, 2014

    • Andrew S.

Hi ken, Dirk is running this trip so I will leave that to him to reply more accurately

      May 15, 2014

    • Dirk

Hi Ken, no problem. Doesn't make any difference as we don't pay for camping. She may contribute to your vehicle access permit and fuel though. But that is something you can negotiate with Tonieta directly.

      1 · May 15, 2014

  • Dirk

    Trip Update.

You can now go ahead with booking the camp site. Sue Gordon offered complimentary camping for our trip (as compensation for some very frustrating negotiations). We are at the Platypus campsite (former Bullhole South). This site has the best amenities with flushing toilets, hot showers and even power. It is located behind the office. While camping is free, if you want power, it is $8, and the 4WD permit is $28 per vehicle. Please call Sue Gordon on[masked] for booking and payment. The online booking system can't deal with this offer, so don't try it. When you talk to Sue, mention our group name (or my name) and Platypus as camp site. Decide if you want power or not and pay $28 or $36, respectively. Sue will keep an area on the western side of the camp site clear for us. Let me know if you run into any problems with the booking. I will update the trip details soon.

    Trip Update.

Most changes to the trip details, identified during and after the recce, have been implemented and from now on only minor changes, if any, may happen. We faced a couple of road closures on our way to Gordon Country, but the alternative routes are probably even nicer. We mapped about 75% of the Gordon Country tracks (no useful maps available) so you all can enjoy the great and very scenic tracks in the park.

We are still waiting for details for our group booking from the owners. Things are definitely happen at a slower pace in Gordon Country. Therefore, please do not yet book your camp site. I expect the required details shortly and will advise here when you can commence booking.

    3 · May 1, 2014

    • Dirk

The way to Gordon Country is easy bitumen and gravel with water crossings. Gordon Country itself will be all 4WDing with various difficulty, from easy to very difficult (option to bypass difficult sections).

      May 4, 2014

    • Shane

Ok cool I can't wait so when do we book at the camp site

Shane, please send me an email with the steps you trying to do and what is not working. Don't post it here. If you use a very old browser version, that could cause such problems. So, include which browser you are using and the version.

Hello dirk r u goin to send that email today

    April 28, 2014

Thank u but I can't find the link for the donation can I pay on the day

      April 28, 2014

    • Dirk

Hi Shane, we try to reduce the workload for the organisers as much as possible and the booking donation is an essential part of this effort. Allowing some people to skip this and pay on the day would completely defeat the purpose of it. So, no, unfortunately that is not possible. It is really not that difficult to find. Look at the top of the page and you will find "Booking donation" in big bold letters and to the right of it is the payment link. Just click on "PAY ONLINE NOW". And to make it even easier, I have sent you an email with a screen shot showing the link in a red circle on the right bottom corner of the image. Hope that helps.

    • Dirk

Hi Shane, I don't quite know what you mean. The booking donation is mentioned right at the top of the trip webpage with a payment link next to it. A bit further down in the trip details under "Important" is it mentioned again. And further down at the end of the trip details it is mentioned again under "Costs", including a detailed explanation. You also received 2 emails with this details. There is really not much more we can do to improve awareness of this important part of the trip. Hope that helps.

      April 7, 2014

  • Dirk

The Gordon Country weekend trip is now open for registration. Please do not book the camp at Gordon Country yet. The camp and vehicle permits should be booked after the recce is completed as conditions may change. We will post a message here when you can go ahead with the booking.

    April 6, 2014

    • Shane

Is this trip suitable for camper trailer or just tents

      April 6, 2014

    • Dirk

At this stage I would say camper trailers are fine if they can handle knee deep water crossings. However, we will know the track details and condition only after the recce.
