Movie: The Grand Budapest Hotel The Grand Budapest Hotel recounts the adventures of legendary concierge Gustave H. and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft of a priceless painting; a raging battle for an enormous family fortune; and a desperate chase on motorcycles, trains, sleds, and skis - all against the back-drop of a suddenly and dramatically changing continent. https://youtu.be/uC4n3_EK_kA ===== The movie will start at 8pm. Come earlier to hang out and join us for a potluck dinner at 7pm. Please bring some food/drinks to share if you'll be joining for dinner. Write in the comments the type of food/drinks you'll be bringing so we don't all bring the same things (e.g., entree, appetizer, dessert, wine, beer)! Note: Please keep your RSVP updated! Remove yourself (including from the waitlist) if you will no longer attend. We will assign a strike if you remove your RSVP at the last minute (< 48 hours notice) or if you flake (no-show). • (SEE NEW DESCRIPTION, NOW ON SAT) Hang out with people, games, conversations

Hi Everyone, Let's hang out, play some games, have interesting conversations, and perhaps watch some stuff. Stuff we may do: *Have interesting conversations (my personal favourite!) *Play various games, including (not in any order): Dominion, Ticket to Ride, Dixit, Jackbox (Quiplash, Fibbage, etc), Codenames, and Secret Hitler. *Watch short TV episodes (mainly while waiting for more people to show up). *Go swimming! *Play pool We generally split up into smaller groups that are each doing different things once enough people have arrived. Suggestions of stuff to bring: *HEALTHY food (fruit/veggies, healthy snacks, etc) *Board/card/portable games *SWIM GEAR *Folding tables/chairs *Stuff to donate *Alcohol, cannabis, and other LEGAL substances *Game consoles (I have 2 CRTs that work great with older stuff like Nintendo 64, and 2 flatscreens that work great with newer stuff). Notes: *WiFi in my apartment and the pool area is available. *Not everyone arrives exactly at 7:30. If you're going to be very late, a heads up is appreciated. IMPORTANT: In order to manage the number of attendees better, I have decided to make the attendee limit really small, and manually move people off the wait-list. People who message me, seem interesting, and/or are regulars will be given priority. I'll TRY to keep it closer to 10 people this time. I have also listed the event as costing $2, in order to help recoup my expenses. Feel free to contact me if you would like to make alternative arrangements. Help preparing/cleaning up and donations of useful stuff (folding tables, games, etc) are both acceptable alternatives. I can accept cash, PayPal, and Venmo (in order of most preferred to least). If there's another option you'd like me to consider, JUST ASK ME! HOUSE RULES: (I'm still flushing these out, these are just to make sure we are all on the same page!) *No photography, audio, or video recording of any kind without my explicit permission AND the permission of anyone who would be recorded. *No doing anything that would open me up to potential legal liability or damage my property or the property of others without my permission. *If you make a mess, clean it up! *Smoking (of tobacco or cannabis) must be done on the balcony with the nearby windows to my apartment closed. Vaporizing inside is okay as long as there is good airflow or you blow out of the window. *You must declare to me any concealed weapons you might be carrying (I don't care about pocketknives, just serious stuff). *No driving home if you are intoxicated. *If something breaks, let me know ASAP! *My apartment is a free speech zone (you know, like the US Constitution says the whole country is supposed to be). Everyone has a right to share their views, even if people (including myself) disagree. That doesn't mean you get to harass people or be a jerk. Intelligent discourse thrives on the free exchange of ideas, and the ability to examine one's own beliefs through the perspective of others. Christian

  • Creative Writing Games 3: The Search for Creative Writing Games 2

    Somewhere in Santa Clara

In preparation for Nanowrimo 2019, creative writing games returns! (Also, bonus points if you get the reference from the event title.) --- Remember in elementary school when you would sit around a circle and create stories by writing for a little bit and passing it to a classmate sitting next to you? Those were some great memories, right? (Oh, you don't remember doing that? Then you missed out. =( ) Regardless, the threequel to the creative writing games event introduced almost a year ago aims to once again recapture the moments of ridiculouslessness and hilarity from those storywriting circles. We'll be playing that game as well as some others. Don't worry if you don't think you're great at writing / wouldn't even call yourself a writer -- the games are less intensive writing and more just short, fun bursts. So just come! It'll be fun regardless of writing skill levels. -- Are there certain events you want to see? Vote for them or add them here: http://tinyurl.com/OffbeatFunWishlist

  • Make prints with cyanotype (a photographic process) [full, hosting again Oct 5]

Harness the power of the sun to make detailed prints from virtually any object that casts a shadow: tools, toys, plants, leaves, stones, sand, string, lace, etc. Simply place the object on the sensitized surface and expose to sunlight. Use a digitally-printed photographic negative (an inverted black and white photo inkjet-printed onto a transparency) instead of an object to create full-resolution photographs on paper or fabric. Cyanotype is the original sun-printing process, one of the earliest photographic techniques. Discovered in 1842 and distinctive for producing rich, Prussian blue monochromatic prints, cyanotype was popular well into the 20th century as an inexpensive method for reproducing photographs, documents, maps and plans, and famously, for making impressions of biological specimens in the field. https://www.jacquardproducts.com/cyanotype-set https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyanotype ============================================ We provide: • cyanotype chemicals • a huge roll paper: Canson XL Mix Media, acid-free, 160 g/m² (98 lb / 500 sheets) You may bring: • stuff to make prints on. Can be any natural fiber/porous surface, including cotton, linen, silk, canvas, wood, paper, wood and leather. • stuff to make prints of. The shadow of any object will become a negative. Cyanotype prints are archival. However, yellowing may occur if prints are exposed to phosphates or high pH solutions. Cyanotype printed fabrics should always be laundered in cold water using non-phosphate detergents. Use care while handling cyanotype prints, as sweat and hand oils may also cause discoloration. ============================================ WHEN YOU RSVP, send $3 using one of these methods: • Venmo: @Peter-Froud • PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/pfroud/3 • Google Pay: [masked] • Zelle: [masked] IMPORTANT - make sure your name on the payment method matches the name on your Meetup profile!!! We need payments in advance to hold Offbeat Fun events. If we don't receive your payment, we'll send you message on Meetup with instructions. Then, if we haven't received your payment within about 12 hours, we'll change your RSVP to "not going".
