The Winter People: A Novel -- Jennifer McMahon

West Hall, Vermont, has always been a town of strange disappearances and old legends. The most mysterious is that of Sara Harrison Shea, who, in 1908, was found dead in the field behind her house just months after the tragic death of her daughter, Gertie. Now, in present day, nineteen-year-old Ruthie lives in Sara's farmhouse with her mother, Alice, and her younger sister, Fawn. Alice has always insisted that they live off the grid, a decision that suddenly proves perilous when Ruthie wakes up one morning to find that Alice has vanished without a trace. Searching for clues, she is startled to find a copy of Sara Harrison Shea's diary hidden beneath the floorboards of her mother's bedroom. As Ruthie gets sucked deeper into the mystery of Sara's fate, she discovers that she's not the only person who's desperately looking for someone that they've lost. But she may be the only one who can stop history from repeating itself.

I sound like a broken record, but I enjoyed it except for the ending.

Was looking forward to coming tonight, but I have to take my son to a baseball game :( I read the book and couldn't put it down. I love spooky stories, so I'm bummed I have to miss.

I thought the book was great up until the ending...I think the ending could have been a lot better.

I enjoyed the author's style and language choices, but the zombie twist left me cold. I enjoy ghost stories more than I like horror stories. Too creepy for me.

See, I was hoping for a ghost story, but I was anticipating the zombie twist. It seemed very inspired of "Pet Cemetery" so I was waiting for it...

I finished the Winter People a few days ago, and I have to say I enjoyed it as a whole. There was one portion that I felt didn't quite add up, so I'm curious to hear everyone's thoughts. I'm also excited to eat at Bistro 258....its been on my list for awhile now!

Finished the Winter People last night. Really enjoyed it, was starting to wonder how in the world the author was going to tie everyone together and still have it make sense. But she did a wonderful job! I found myself feeling really bad for Gertie and also very creeped out by her! I did get frustrated in the end for Ruthie though. She worked so hard to catch up and excel in school so she could go to college only to end up having to be responsible for Gertie and her behavior.

Very excited for this book, and to finally eat at Bistro 258. I picked up my copy today, and as soon as I finish the book I'm working on, I'll dig in!
