Canadian jazz impresario Cory Weeds presents a tribute to the late alto saxophonist and bandleader Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, featuring famed drummer Roy McCurdy. McCurdy, a veteran musician who toured and recorded with Cannonball Adderley in
the 1960’s, is featured on the new album “Swingin’ In Seattle: Live At The Penthouse.” Thea lbum, produced for release by Cory Weeds’ record label Reel-to-Real, is comprised of radio
broadcasts of the Adderley band from 1966 and 1967 at The Penthouse Jazz Club in Seattle. The original broadcasts were recorded by Seattle’s favorite jazz DJ Jim Wilke, host of “Jazz
Northwest” on KNKX radio, and longtime host of the syndicated program “Jazz After Hours.”
Roy McCurdy represents more than fifty years of jazz history. His swift and fluent drumming has powered some of the best-loved names in jazz including Sonny Rollins, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Herbie Hancock and of course, “Cannonball” Adderley.
Alto saxophonist Cory Weeds has been something of a one-man jazz industry in Vancouver, B.C for the last twenty years. He’s been a jazz radio host, nightclub owner, record producer, label owner and leads fans on jazz tours of New York City. On top of that, he’s
managed to maintain a career as a jazz performer, with a series of notable and well-received albums to his credit. Presenting the music of the masters, alongside respected elders, has been a
long-term mission for Weeds. Weeds and McCurdy lead an all-star band of northwest talent in celebration of Cannonball Adderley’s music and the newly released album. The band features pianist Marc Seales, bassist Michael Glynn and trumpeter Thomas Marriott. The band plays Rhythm N’ Rye in Olympia on January 14th at 8:00 PM
