What we're about

THE BASICS

This Meetup group is for anyone having lived experience with a mental health or substance use challenge. We don't focus on labels or diagnoses. We are a group created by people with lived experience, joining together as a peer community. Here we will be posting a wide variety of community events, educational opportunities, and gatherings just for fun. Our focus is on adults experiencing behavioral and mental health challenges. However, we do not wish to exclude family members or other supporters. Participation in each event is determined by its individual owners.

WHAT WE ARE ABOUT

Mental health and substance use challenges are common. Every year, one-in-four adults in the United States experiences some form of mental health or substance use challenge. We are those people. Often, we feel isolated, alone, and disconnected from society. In many cases, we have feared that we were the only ones living with these experiences; that nobody could relate. In those cases, we may not have known how to reach out for support. We are people faced with stigma, fear, and misunderstanding from all areas of society. The goal of our Meetup group is to foster the growth of a community of people who have experience with behavioral health challenges that is supportive, empowering, and free of all stigma. We value mutual respect, freedom of choice, personal responsibility, and shared hope in the pursuit of recovery as defined by each individual.

WHAT WE ARE NOT

This group is not intended to provide or receive ANY kind of behavioral health treatment, social services, or emergency care. Unless otherwise stated, the organizers of the Omaha Wellness & Recovery Community Meetup group do not own the events posted here and do not necessarily ascribe to any particular beliefs or statements made by event organizers. The organizers will do our best to post only events that promote health and wellness, but each person is responsible for his/her actions and safety. We will not be held responsible for the actions of event organizers or participants. We reserve the right to decline or remove any event for any reason, without explanation. Membership in this group is a privilege, not a right, and members may be removed indefinitely for behavior that is in any way harmful to the community or other members.
