"Knowing how to speak Chinese doesn't mean you know what to say in Chinese"

Language or Culture?

When I first entered Mainland China via ferry from Hong Kong International Airport in 2004, I spoke fluent Mandarin Chinese. My prior business experience at the time was Country Manager, Taiwan, and opening a US representative office for a Taiwanese OEM.

I was later hired because I spoke Chinese, and I was confident in my new role in establishing channel partners in China for a small American company.

My culture shock began immediately upon exiting the Shekou Ferry Terminal, even though it was just a 5-minute drive to Nan Hai Hotel, the only 5-star hotel in Shenzhen at the time.

Even though the local dialect is Cantonese, most people I met spoke Mandarin and were in the Special Economic Zone seeking opportunities that didn’t exist elsewhere in China at the time.

This is how my China story began, and I've extracted 10 Chinese cultural concepts that I believe will help anyone learn how Chinese people think, why they behave the way they do, and how to create more positive communication patterns that lead to more constructive collaboration.

Book Overview

Transform the reality of your success and those you partner with in China with The Chinese Honeymoon Period - the only practical, cultural awareness guide based on extracting human psychological traits and managing their perceptions and misperceptions - from Gene J. Hsu, author of Solving CHINA's Unknown Unknowns and host of China Myth Podcast.

Winning in China begins with WHY, not yours, theirs.

This first-time author has revealed the most important message for a generation. America entered a Chinese honeymoon period in 1972 when Nixon visited the People's Republic of China (PRC). While both sides benefited from "China's opening" to the West, current geopolitical tensions are a microcosm of our collective myopia and a lack of cultural awareness. "An unprecedented approach to solving our China leadership dilemmas"
