What we're about

This group offers online English/Spanish language exchanges. After logging into a meeting through Zoom, participants are divided into "breakout rooms" of two to six people per "room." The host(s) will try to divide Spanish and English native speakers equally between rooms, and will notify participants every fifteen minutes that it is time to change languages. The meetings are free.

These online events are offered simultaneously to meetup groups in Madrid, Barcelona and New York City. We also have participants from London, Buenos Aires, Toronto, Santiago, Houston, Mexico City, Chicago and Los Angeles; meeting start times for these additional cities are provided in event listings.

It is only necessary to sign up in one group; participants from all cities are joining the same Zoom language exchange. Before Covid-19, the original Madrid group met twice a week at the VIPs restaurant in the El Viso neighborhood.

Chat is informal, without set topics. It is suggested that participants speak the second language at an intermediate level (B1) or better.

After logging in, participants may encounter a five to ten minute delay before they are transferred to breakout rooms. The host(s) may be busy transferring dozens of new arrivals. Participants will be more quickly transferred if they have edited their Zoom "display names" to show their native languages. (Example: "Timothy MadridESL" could be edited to "English Timothy.")

Participants are free to leave their breakout rooms and return to the main room if a conversation doesn't work out, and are encouraged to do so if their breakout room does not have at least one native speaker of the language to be learned. They then can be assigned to a different breakout room.

When the meeting is about to end, all breakout rooms will be closed, and participants will be returned to the main room for a brief farewell.

In the interests of privacy, all Zoom settings that would permit recording of meetings have been deactivated.
