Open Data Day

On Saturday, February 23rd, activists in dozens of cities around the world will be coming together to participate in Open Data Day. From the website:

If you have an idea for using open data, want to find an interesting project to contribute towards, learn about how to visualize or analyze data or simply want to see what's happening, then definitely come participate! No matter your skillset or interests, we are encouraging organizers to foster opportunities for you to learn and help the global open data community grow.

This is a chance not just to meet local activists but to meet and work with open data activists around the world. We'll be playing tutorials, chats and demos from other cities, and perhaps even making a demo for others to use. Let us know if you have anything you'd like to present about, whether just to us or to the wider Open Data Day community. :)

We'll be at BoCoup loft* from 1pm to 5pm. The Sunlight Foundation is generously providing us pizza and drinks, so let us know if you have requests/allergies/etc.

For project ideas, and more details, check the planning wiki.

* Bocoup loft is a short, 5 min walk from South Station. Make sure to follow these directions though as it can be confusing if you go straight down Summer St.

As a heads up, the front door into BoCoup automatically locks. There's a sign with our phone #s on the door - just give us a call and someone will come right down to let you in.

Hope to make it. What will we be working on? Will there be Linked/RDF/Semantic Data?

Should I bring my laptop or will computers be available to work on?

      You should bring your laptop.

My understanding is that Open Data Day is focused on brainstorming ways that public data can be opened and used for the common good. Still, it's hard to resist stretching the formal boundaries to ask:

Q: What would happen if an unconference or hackathon were to pop-up this weekend or in the future to explore Open Data in Real Estate?

For idea starters, see this post on NEW Google+ Community called
    Real Estate Consumer Alliance

    http://bit.ly/OpenREdata

    Excerpts:

    2. Instead of asking whether the MLS should be a public utility, look at whether existing tax assessor records and other public databases related to housing which interact with an emerging "internet of things" to create a publicly accessible eco-system that will replace the MLS; and 3. Rather than reacting to the existing model, maybe it would be wiser to ask how would the real estate eco-system be organized * IF the MLS did not exist? Q: Brainstorm or Hack on this?

Hi Bill, I've created a wiki page to help organize the projects we'll be working on tomorrow. Feel free to put information about OpenREdata on there, and to recruit helpers. :) https://openhatch.org/...

I'm interested in learning more R programming and applying starts top data. Allergies: peanuts.

That sounds like I'll be able to help at least a little bit. One thing that's always super useful is to document the problems that you have. If you document your progress we can help turn it into an "Beginning Analysis of Public Data in R" Tutorial. Then you have the silver lining of more stuff for your tutorial whenever you run into trouble! :)

I can help with R also.

One good use of our time might be to make a few short (5-10 minutes or less) videos demo-ing some open data techniques or projects. Ideas for this include:
    - a video demonstrating how to use an API and call it in python (basically a video version of the API project we are making for the IntroToOpenGov project)
    - an intro to open states, or muckrock, or other member projects (some of these may already exist!)
    - an intro to basic data processing like checking for errors and missing fields, etc
    - an intro to some basic statistical tests one might want to apply to data
