• Special Hack Night: Open Disclosure Launch Party!
Midterm elections are around the corner on November 6, 2018. For Oakland that means seats for mayor, and council members and Board of Ed seats for Districts 2, 4, 6 are up for re-election. The Open Disclosure Team at OpenOakland has been collaborating with the Oakland Public Ethics Commission to make campaign finance more accessible. Tonight we celebrate the launch of www.opendisclosure.io, with a live demonstration of our web-based application that visualizes campaign finance data for all Oakland candidates and ballot measures in the 2018 election. Food will be provided. We provide a safe space, wi-fi, great peeps, and dinner. Come meet OpenOakland and find out how we are making an impact and where you can fit in. **Tonight we have a special speaker, Madeleine Bair. For the past year, Madeleine Bair has been leading collaborative research to map the information needs of Oakland's Latino immigrants. At Open Oakland, she will share her findings and discuss how community and municipal organizations, media outlets, and civic hackers can work to break down information barriers and create a more inclusive, engaged city. To learn more about the information needs assessment, check out Madeleine's blog, "Deep Listening to Map a Community's Information Needs." You can check out the full report at this link. Madeleine is the Founding Director of El Tímpano—a local reporting and civic engagement initiative designed to inform and empower Oakland's Latino immigrant community. Madeleine has been carrying a microphone in her backpack since she belonged to the Oakland bureau of the pioneering youth media organization, Children’s Express. As Senior Program Manager at the international human rights organization, WITNESS, she led a pioneering initiative dedicated to advancing the use of citizen video as a tool for human rights reporting and advocacy. Madeleine has taught radio production to young adults, worked on a morning show at Chicago Public Radio, and produced multimedia for Human Rights Watch. Her stories have appeared in the Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, Orion, and Colorlines, and broadcast on public radio programs including PRI’s The World and Afropop Worldwide. Her documentary film on a first-generation high school graduate aired on PBS as part of its Latino Graduates series. Madeleine earned a dual MA in Journalism and International Studies from UC Berkeley, and a BA from the University of Chicago. • National Day of Civic Hacking
Mark your calendars - the National Day of Civic Hacking (NDoCH) is August 11th! This year, OpenOakland is excited to partner with various State of California departments for this year's theme: Finding solutions to provide access to safe drinking water for all Californians. The event will be focused on the State of California GovOps' Safe Drinking Water Data Challenge (http://waterchallenge.data.ca.gov/). OpenOakland will be facilitating a design-a-thon from 10AM-4PM on August 11th at Oakstop. We welcome all hackers, designers, communicators, and community members to help brainstorm solutions to California’s unsafe drinking water problem. No coding experience is necessary. Hope to see you there! Read more about NDoCH here: https://www.codeforamerica.org/national-day-of-civic-hacking Get ready for #NDoCHOak2018
