Sum up Meetup 9-11

Kick off meeting for OTS Bxl @ hsbxl

1) Description of OTS
Main website: (yay, our city is already on the website, bottom left corner)
- OTS offers a structure to make easy the organisation of workshop by coaches (place, wifi, food & drinks...).
- In order to keep a strong identity and community, it's centred on Brussels and on new technology and their application. Having satellites OTS over Belgium is possible and encouraged. Having workshops that teach the usage of new tech focused on a specific topic (finance, art, biology, writing, cooking...) is possible and encouraged.
- What OTS is all about is learning hands on. The workshop are supposed to make the student do something. No broadcasting teachers, but coaches that help the student work by themselves. (http://opentechschool...)
- If OTS is all about learning, hopefully other organisation will spawn from the community and more centred on projects (hackaton, DIY, start ups...)
- Coaches are not meant to be remunerated. It would threaten the horizontal structure where students become coach. Emphasis is on sharing rather than straight "teaching". As long as one expert coach is there, other coach don't have to be 100% reliable.
- OTS is about meeting in the real world, about creating a physical community that would not stop at learning, but would use newly acquired skills to create and build. Meetup fits that spirit. The more we can rely only on either Meetup or the offical OTS website, the better.
- For now, if coaches or student want a workshop, they can broadcast their offering/needs on the mailing list. If enough people are interested, then we create a meetup.
- A workshop needs at least 1 organiser, and a good ration between coaches and student (1 coach for 3-5 students).
- It's okay if people come for only 1 workshop, if they come just because their TV show was cancelled or if they just saw light and entered. As long as they can learn (a good mindset and prerequisites validated) and do so, everybody's welcome.
- Is the name protected / trademarked ? That's a good question, to be investigated.

OTS is:
- an Open source and Free movement
- offering free workshop
- empowering people (any people) through new technology.
- reaching out to new learners (expert in different sectors or complete beginners)
- reaching out to new learners (did we say it already?) from any horizons (women, youngsters, elderly, ludites...)
- bend horizontally. No strong hierarchy. Learn as a student. Become easily a coach. Teach and practice as a coach. Come organise.
- not stopping there. This is a platform to create more creative local organisations

3) Reaching out
- Easy to teach a geek, harder to teach a beginner (even if just staying in front of the computer...)
- Targeting audiences like art schools to show what can be done with technology could bring in more diversity in the audience.
- Are English materials appropriate for young / non-tech audiences? Writing workshops' materials in English/French/Dutch would be perfect. Translators welcomed!
- Everybody can present OTS. Materials are being created right now (Slides, poster, flyers...)
- Good idea of putting flyers close to places that teach new technology for money.
- It would be a good idea to reach out to agencies for unemployed people.

4) Organisation
- There is a presentation expected at La Fabrique (close to Mons, around 5th October). If anybody is interested, please get in touch with an organiser.
- There is also a hackaton expected in the following months at La Fabrique. (Read "We already got the place and the oral approval of the director. If we work for it, there will be one, if not, there won't")
- It would be interested to have a stand at TEDx Brussels, because there are 2500 persones interested in technology who know nothing about it. Anybody knows how to do that? If so, get in touch with an organiser please.
- Betagroup Coworking has a good place to give classes, people working on startups who can teach and be interested. A good start to have links with the entrepreneur community.
- Venues : we have already one, the hackerspace. It is still work in progress. A few other ideas : iMAL, ULB, Betagroup... It is not meant to be always in the same place or in hackerspaces, and can be done in someone's place if that fits. The venue can also determine which kind of people will come up.
- Ideas of sponsors are welcome. First objective is to offer free drinks and food at the workshop. Palm and Redbull do a lot of sponsoring. Any body got contacts? (not the most urgent task but funding always welcomed)
- It'd be interesting to get some Raspberry Pi and screens so people without computers could still come and practice. (if enough sponsoring, they could even come back home with the raspberry Pi to plug on a TV... )

5) Presentation of everybody.
(if you want to see the notes about that, go to )

6) Next steps:

Propositions for first workshops:
- Python Workshop
- Processing Workshop (
- Web development Workshop (HTML and CSS)

Spreading the word. Bringing in more "non-geeks". Having a more varied community.

7) Kudos to all of us to be here. Great stuff are coming.

(Thanks to Hugo for the notes)
