Opportunity Zone investment is an investment program created in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (the Tax Reform Act), that allows the deferral and reduction of tax on capital gains if those gains are reinvested in property or businesses in low income communities in accordance with the program and its holding periods, and permits additional gains to be tax free if these investments are held for at least ten years.

The new Opportunity Zone tax incentive represents a novel concept to encourage real estate and business investors to bring greater economic prosperity to lower income communities. It’s not perfect, of course, but it is definitely something we need to be aware of as we work to do our part to make a positive social impact through our professional and business efforts and expertise.
