Chapman University presents Franz Lehar's celebrated Viennese operetta, set in turn of the century France. As champagne flows, can-can girls dance, and Lehar's incomparable music swirls, a suitable husband is sought for The Merry Widow, who also happens to have inherited a fortune. A former paramour seems to fit the bill, but after their bad break up, she is not so willing to forgive. A host of complications arise, even as sparks continue to fly between the two. The operetta is sung in German with dialogue in English.
Chapman University has an outstanding music department with a specialized degree in opera. The head of the opera department is Dr. Peter Arthurton, who studied at Julliard and has sung major operatic roles around the world. I am attending as an "opera rookie". I encourage other first timers to join us. The price is right and the quality of the production will be excellent.
