You've heard of the term "object-oriented" largely due to legendary computer scientist Alan Kay who popularized it while working at the legendary Xerox Parc. There, he designed one of the most influential languages of all time: Smalltalk. I've been hearing about it for decades, how it influenced just about every major OO language including Java, Groovy, Scala, Python, Go, and many others.

Furthermore, I've heard learning it can make you a better programmer and change how you think about design. We're lucky to have longtime Smalltalk expert Arden Thomas from Cincom (biggest commercial Smalltalk provider) educate us about the language and what makes it special.

Arden Thomas, Cincom Smalltalk Product Manager, will be discussing:

- What is it?
- Who uses it?
- How is it different?
- Why should you care?
- Examples

and includes:

- The principles of the Smalltalk language
- A brief introduction to Smalltalk and the benefits of knowing OO languages
- How knowing Smalltalk can enhance your skills for any OO language
- Some comparisons of Smalltalk to Java

Arden Thomas started using Smalltalk in 1986, when he was researching and exploring better ways to do software development. He found it! Smalltalk and object-oriented were such a profoundly improved approach to software development, that he made a full commitment to using Smalltalk. Arden used Smalltalk in his post-graduate work thesis and projects. Arden has worked with Smalltalk for IBM, Parcplace Systems, ParcPlace-Digitalk, ObjectShare, and a hedge fund in a number of capacities including; developer, trainer, architect, consultant, and sales SE. Arden is currently the Cincom Smalltalk product manager managing Cincom’s ObjectStudio and VisualWorks products.
