Wow! We're halfway through the season. And it's been a blast. Because of the great reaction for the show we've decided to move it into OC SciFi's most prestigious slot, Sunday Nights. Lol. Actually it makes things a bit easier for the organizer and makes new shows possible in the Saturday Slot. Interesting insights from the various meetups so far include how intense the show is. Maybe part of the reason why they need to make it a weekly show rather than a binge drop. Your head would explode if you just went through everything that happened in the first four episodes in one night. Also who is Liberty? A clone of Stormfront? A reversed aged supe? (I'm looking at you Vaught+). It's a rough show but it's also funny and diverting. I can't wait to see the rest with all of you. The plan is to watch episode 5 on Sunday and then watch 6 & 7 two weeks later. Plans change (remember it's 2020) so nothing is written in stone but let's see how it goes. RSVPs close 1 hour before the meetup. That is also when the Zoom Link will be posted on the website. No appeals to get into the meetup will be heard after the meetup starts. Attention of the audience then should be on the show and each other. There will be other meetups later. Adjustments to the process might be forthcoming if for instance a meetup becomes insanely popular. But let's see how this works. In any case lets get together and have some SAFE socializing!" "The even more intense, more insane Season 2 finds The Boys on the run from the law, hunted by the Supes, and desperately trying to regroup and fight back against Vought." Evil Apples is basically like playing Cards Against Humanity on your phone or tablet. The free app also has a feature that allows us to text chat with each other before, during, and after the game. It's a lot of fun! To play, all you have to do is download the free Evil Apples app on your phone or tablet and set up your account. To join our voice chat during the game, you'll need to download the free Discord app and create an account. Once you have a Discord account, use this link to join our OC Sci-Fi/Fantasy server. We usually play 2 games per night, depending on the number of players. Participation will be limited to the first 10 people who RSVP. Our next event will be on Monday, September 21, at 7 PM. Just before we start, I'll post the Game Code needed to join our game in the comments below.
Our new Book Club is up and running! Each month, we'll read (or listen to) and then discuss one sci-fi or fantasy book. For now, we'll meet virtually on Zoom until we can once again meet in person. The New York Times called Ray Bradbury "the writer most responsible for bringing modern science fiction into the literary mainstream." In August, Bradbury would have turned 100 had he lived (he died in 2012 at age 91). In his honor, September's book club selection is "Fahrenheit 451." "Fahrenheit 451" is a dystopian novel, first published in 1953. Often regarded as one of his best works, the novel presents a future American society where books are outlawed and "firemen" burn any that are found. The book's tagline explains the title: "Fahrenheit 451 – the temperature at which book paper catches fire, and burns..." In addition to print, the book is available in ebook and audiobook formats. It can be borrowed for free on library apps like RBdigital and OverDrive. If you've never used Zoom, you'll want to create an account on Zoom.us or through the free Zoom app. There are plenty of articles and videos online that describe how Zoom works. I have a free Zoom account so our meetings are limited to 40 minutes. I'll post a link to the meeting and the meeting ID on the day of the event. For now, we're holding our Book Club meetings on the 4th Thursday of the month on Zoom. If that day/time doesn't work for you, please post a comment below, and we'll take that into consideration when scheduling the next Book Club meeting. Also, feel free to post any questions you have about the book or the Zoom meeting.
Wow, we're deep into the season with this the first two of the Final Four episodes. It's been a great ride so far. I never though an animated Star Trek show would be much more than childish but the producers and cast have a wonderful show that has made me laugh and forget the Pandemic, thirty minutes at a time. Let's watch together and see how this all finishes up The Zoom Room will be open at 6PM New episodes will be shown at 7. My plan is to watch the old TNG episode "The Inner Light” first. And open a breakout room for socializing (The host will be there to explain how to use it) will be available till 7. RSVPs close 1 hour before the meetup. That is also when the Zoom Link will be posted on the website. NO ONE without an RSVP will be admitted after the meetup has started at 6. 2020 has taught us that unexpected things happen and so if (for example) a meetup becoming insanely popular We might have to adjust things. But we will deal with everything as it comes up. In any case let’s get together and have some SAFE socializing!" "Star Trek: Lower Decks takes place on the USS Cerritos in the year 2380, where a group of aspiring ensigns are relegated to doing thankless work on the lower decks, while the bridge crew take all the glory they can get.'" Showrunner is Mike McMahan of Rick and Morty fame. And voices include Jack Quaid from "The Boys," Jerry O'Connell and Paul Scheer. https://youtu.be/V3RkBKedKWw
