What we're about
Upcoming events (5+)
Please refrain from wearing perfume, cologne, etc. due to members' fragrance sensitivity. Star Trek, one of the most iconic and influential global television franchises, returns with "Star Trek: Discovery." The series will feature a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers. We are able to watch "Star Trek: Discovery" thanks to CBS All Access subscription. Please bring food or beverages to share. Bottled water will be provided (a $1 donation is always appreciated). Remember to post what you're bringing in the conversation below (and read what other people are bringing) so we have a nice assortment of food and drinks. Feel free to wear your favorite Star Trek apparel. Details and directions will be sent to those who RSVP "Yes" on the Friday night before the Meetup.
NOTE: In order to attend this viewing party, a member must have attended AT LEAST ONE previous OC Sci-Fi/Fantasy Meetup Group event. Also, please REFRAIN FROM WEARING PERFUME, cologne, etc. due to members' sensitivity to fragrance. Join us as we witness the trials, triumphs, tyrannies, treachery, and tragedies that play out in the long shadow of the iron throne as winter comes and we celebrate the final season of "Game of Thrones." We'll begin at 4:30 p.m. with a potluck of Westeros-themed food and drink (like lemon cakes and ale but please no pigeon pie or poisoned wine). PLEASE READ: Each attendee is expected to BRING FOOD OR DRINK TO SHARE PLUS $2 for the Iron Bank. Please post below what food or drink you’re bringing so we don’t end up with nothing but dessert (yes, it’s happened). FINAL NOTE: Due to the popularity of this event and out of courtesy to anyone on the waitlist, a strict attendance policy will be in effect. Those who RSVP "Yes" but either don't show up or cancel less than 4 hours before the event start time will not be allowed to attend the next GoT episode's viewing party. If a person "no-shows" a second time, he/she will be banished from GoT viewing parties for the rest of the season. That being said, we're not as ruthless as the Night King so emergency situations will be taken into consideration.
Join us for food, fandom, and friendship at our monthly Meet & Greet dinner at Mimi's Cafe in Lake Forest. We'll talk about our favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV shows, movies, and books and go over upcoming events as we get to know each other a little better. Plus, anyone whose birthday is this month gets to choose something from our bag of geeky gifts. Our donations box will be there for those who want to help with the cost of running this group. We've reserved Mimi's private dining room which is just past the bar on the left. It's okay if you can't arrive by 6:30—just post that you'll be late in the conversation below so we save a chair for you. Mimi's Cafe is on Lake Forest Dr. Coming from the 5 or the 405, take the Lake Forest Dr exit and go east on Lake Forest Dr. At the 2nd signal after Rockfield, turn left into Lake Forest Town Center (Jack in the Box is on the corner), then turn right. Mimi's is just past Jack in the Box.
Every Wednesday, Durty Nelly's Irish Pub hosts a Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz. We go as a group on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. Sometimes our team places in the top two and wins a bar credit; sometimes we don't do as well. But, no matter where we place, we always have a lot of fun! We meet for dinner starting at 6:30, and the pub quiz starts at 7:00. It's important to RSVP so we know how many tables to reserve and whether we'll need to split into two teams (there's a maximum of six per team). Also, please post in the conversation below if you can't get there by 7 p.m. so we know to save a spot for you on our team. Durty Nelly's is located in the Stonemill Design Center on Red Hill Ave just northeast of Bristol. It's usually chilly inside so remember to bring a sweater or jacket. Due to the location, this is a 21-and-over event. Below is a description of what Geeks Who Drink is: Geeks Who Drink is a homegrown Pub Trivia Quiz modeled after those in Ireland and the UK. Quizzes cover everything from celebrities in trouble to wordplay to bad television. Each quiz has two audio rounds: a "Name that Tune” style round, and another round comprised of soundbites from movies and TV. Play in teams of up to six or by yourself if you're some kind of savant. If you want to play but don’t have a team, come anyway. We can usually get single players recruited onto an existing team. Winning teams gets street cred, bar cash and other prizes depending on the venue. Bonus Questions for free pints are sprinkled throughout the quiz. You don’t have to be a trivia God to enjoy the quiz. Since you’re playing on a team, the collective knowledge base makes for more fun, less pressure. It’s not final friggin' Jeopardy.
