What we’re about

This is a terrific Meetup group for people who enjoy playing Scrabble. We are an established Scrabble Club of 45 years of different ability levels, and are now adding Meetup contacts to the group. The cost is free. When: Every Tuesday, 12 PM to 4 pm, then 5:00 pm to 9 pm. Come to one or both sessions depending on how many games you would to like to play.

If possible, come 15 minutes before a session begins: this is a good time to get oriented with our Meetup Group and Club, socialize, get pointers, and review how the club game of Scrabble is played. Where: The IHOP restaurant, 18782 Beach Blvd, Huntington Beach, CA 92648
(Between Ellis & Garfield) We play in a private room on the East side of the restaurant.

How: We actually get in 4 games per session, and each game is one on one. This maximizes our Scrabble per player. No waiting around for 2 or 3 other players to take their turn.
Most of our regulars have Scrabble boards and colorful tiles and a chess clock. One of biggest observations we hear from casual players is that people don’t want to play Scrabble because “so and so” takes too long per turn, and the home games end up over 90 minutes...zzzz :-) So we came up with a solution for that:
The chess clock is used to ensure that most games finish in under 50 minutes. Each player has 25 minutes of game time for all moves, so it helps to make easier plays quicker. It is by no means speed Scrabble, but it does move along at a little better pace than the typical home game. Why: This is the $ 64,000 Question !
There are many reasons people enjoy playing at our Meetup and Club. Here are the most frequent reasons people come to play:

  1. You enjoy playing the game, but after awhile you get good enough that you start running out of family, friends or coworkers who want to play you. Our club is sort of a sanctuary for players that started out as one of the best in their family / neighborhood.
  2. Not many people seem to have time to play a few games.
  3. The Facebook and Words With Friends apps are fun, but you want to play a live person, socialize, and not wait 12 to 24 hours for your opponent to make a move. 4) You may want a challenge and learn how to improve at Scrabble, both on the strategy and word knowledge. How much you improve is related to how quickly you learn.
What to Expect: A friendly group of people who enjoy playing Scrabble. The Group is not a social group first, but rather a Scrabble Group where socialization and friends develop inside and outside the Group.
Our newbies/novices typically average 275 to 325 pt a game. Our intermediate players about 340-375 pt. and our experts average over 400 pt per game. Our experts players are skilled and a great resource for a treasure trove of information on how a newer player can learn ways to increase their score, play better defense, and learn the subtleties of Scrabble. We all remember the first time we walked into a Scrabble Group, not unlike the first day of school, so we know how to relate to newer players. This group is not only one of the longest running Scrabble Groups in the U.S., but also one of the the most warm and welcoming. The directors allow all newbies the use of a double sided cheat sheet, which has all the allowable 2 and 3 letter words, J - Q- X - Z smaller words, double I and U words, etc. Hope to see some of you at the IHOP. Happy Tiling!
