  • UX Speed Networking: Mentor Match

    Bar Louie

Can you think back into your life to someone who you admire? Perhaps this is someone who is very successful in their career, their family life, or even socially? It is very likely that this person had a mentor. A good mentor will help you stay accountable to your goals, they will help you pay attention and stay on track. When you get frustrated and want to give up they understand the problems because they have been there themselves and can provide insight on how to solve the problems that you are facing. Mentors are invaluable for so many reasons, but essential for providing knowledge, motivation, advice and counsel, encouragement when you need it most, help with personal development and so much more. If you are lucky enough to find a mentor who can be all of these things to you, you will have an advantage over many others, because you have a secret weapon that can take you to the top! The mentors we will introduce you to have worked in tech for many years and know the good and bad of working in the business and can help guide you on the hurdles that you face. THE PROGRAM: OCUX brings you Mentor Match at our next UX Speed Networking event. During this event three senior level tech mentors will meet and choose two mentees apiece to develop a relationship with and help the mentees with their goals and aspirations. THE PROCESS: If you are interested in being considered to be a mentee bring your business card or resume and hand one off to all three of your potential mentors during the event on Thursday, Feb. 6. They will pick from the business cards and resumes they receive that night. As part of this year's vision to create better connections in the UX community we are borrowing a successful idea from our friends in San Diego at UX Speakeasy so you can meet peers and possible mentors right in your neighborhood. We are hosting a small-scale event using a mock speed dating format that allows you to quickly make connections in your community. Here's how it will work: 6:30-7:00: Meet at the venue and socialize. Make sure you connect with Deanna and Eleanor for any directions they might have for you. 7:00-7:45: You'll be given a set of questions and paired off with someone you don't know, then be given 10 mins to learn as much about each other as possible. You'll have 6 rounds to meet others. As this game depends on having pairs, if you join in on the game, please intend to stay for the whole game as it's very disruptive. If you must leave, be sure to let one of the organizers know so we can sub in. 7:30-8:30: More socializing and continued conversation You'll be added to the OCUX Slack channel to connect with your new peers! This is a 21 and over, no-host event. You will be responsible for your own food and drink. ***Waitlist will be enforced!! • How to be an Exceptional UX/UI Designer and Get Paid Top-Dollar

Irvine Ranch Water District - Community Meeting Room

Hey Designers and Entrepreneurs, I have a great line-up for you this month - a change from what was originally posted. I secured a high caliber speaker that I am confident you will really enjoy. Since we have this opportunity, I want to give her as much time as possible so I will do a quick intro to the Meetup Group and the UX design project we have been working on and then will give her the floor for the rest of the meeting or until she needs to leave. Sorry, no UX Portfolio or Startup presentations but we will pick that up next month. She usually charges for her well renown seminars but she has agreed to do a donation only session for us (suggested donation $25). Please give generously. This seminar is presented by Sonya Lee, the founder of Mowie Media - a boutique design agency helping visionary startups build better products and businesses through design. -------- From Sonya... I just sent off over $21,000 worth in invoices for freelance design work performed. It might have been my most lucrative month ever. I’d like to talk about what I did to make it the most profitable for me, and share how I’ve gotten to this point in my design career. I've run my own design business for 12 years, gaining a deep understanding of project management, empathetic UX practices, and an agile design process. But I never set out to be this way - it just happened naturally. As I became comfortable with the process, I realized that success is more than just talent. In this seminar, I will teach you everything that I've learned on my own on... - How to get paid top-dollar. - How to develop bulletproof confidence - How to say "No" but get them to come back for more - How to fend off bad ideas - How to attract long-term clients ... and how to be your best self. Bio: Sonya Lee is a keynote speaker, user-experience expert, business consultant and spiritual coach in Orange County, California. By age 26, she became an award-winning web designer and has the honor of being called “disruptive” when helping Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, launch Disney.com. She has worked on brands for Warner Bros, AT&T, TrueCar, Adobe, Cisco and launched several tech companies. With more than 20 years of experience in branding, marketing, UX/UI, technology and startups, she now helps Fortune 100 companies and entrepreneurs increase revenue by adding human relationships and empathy back to marketing campaigns, sales messages, branding and technology that genuinely speaks to and attracts customers. At an early age, Sonya was sent to live in a monastery that left her emotionally scarred and struggling to know her true self. Being cut off from mainstream society initially stunted her growth, but rather than shrink back, she used her journey to push the boundaries of personal evolution and improve the human experience. She continues to work with startups, entrepreneurs to develop their potential, design better products and strategize their business. Sonya is also the founder of UX Your Life™ and the UserX™, frameworks designed to maximize the human potential by aligning mind, body, spirit and business.
