What we're about

California Writers Club members write novels, short stories, screenplays, poetry, nonfiction articles, books, and more. Over half are published. Established in 1909, the mission is to educate writers of all genres and levels of expertise in the craft and marketing of their work.

The Orange County chapter meets monthly as a community of writers inspired to learn more about literary tools and the business of writing.

Guest Speaker: Cherie Kephart Topic: "Soul Therapy: The Spirit of Writing" THIS WILL BE A LIVE EVENT PRESENTED ON ZOOM. GUESTS WILL BE EMAILED THE ZOOM LINK AND PASSWORD AT LEAST 4 HOURS PRIOR TO THE EVENT START. Cherie has a Master’s degree in Medical and Cultural Anthropology and has been celebrated for her holistic approach to healing. This has led to her willingness to examine her life lessons in her writing. Raised in Venice, California, Cherie longed to travel and experience the way other people lived. After serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Zambia, Cherie fell severely ill, leaving her with several symptoms that went undiagnosed for years. This inspired Cherie to write her memoir “A Few Minor Adjustments: A Memoir of Healing.” Her memoir has won several awards and received an outpouring of heartfelt responses, motivating Cherie to write a companion book, “The Healing 100: A Practical Guide to Transforming Your Body, Mind, and Spirit.” Her third book “Poetry of Peace” is a rare and poignant collection of poems that celebrate the decadence and darkness of life. This talk is sure to inspire each writer to dig deep inside to bring out the best in us. Guest Speaker: Patrick Coleman Topic: "Writing Across Genres" THIS WILL BE A LIVE EVENT PRESENTED ON ZOOM. GUESTS WILL BE EMAILED THE ZOOM LINK AND PASSWORD AT LEAST 4 HOURS PRIOR TO THE EVENT START. This is a topic near and dear to my heart, as I am drawn to write anything gripping that pops into my head. Patrick’s first novel, “The Churchgoer” was a LitHub Most Anticipated Book of Summer, released by Harper Perennial in 2019. It is being adapted for FX television to star Matthew McConaughey. His debut collection of poems, “Fire Season” was written by speaking into a digital audio recorder on long commutes. It won the 2015 Berkshire Prize and was released by Tupelo Press on December 1, 2018. His short-form prose has appeared in numerous publications. He is the Assistant Director of the Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination at UC San Diego. Patrick certainly knows how to write across genres with a high degree of success. We are lucky to have this esteemed teacher and writer share his knowledge with us. Guest Speaker: Maggie Downs Topic: "Writing A Memorable Memoir" THIS WILL BE A LIVE EVENT PRESENTED ON ZOOM. GUESTS WILL BE EMAILED THE ZOOM LINK AND PASSWORD AT LEAST 4 HOURS PRIOR TO THE EVENT START. William Butler Yeats said the writer takes everyday life and turns it into art. Maggie will discuss how to create a compelling story rather than simply retelling events. Maggie worked for a dozen years as a newspaper reporter, on the police beat in Ohio, then food & entertainment in Palm Springs. When her mother was struck with early-onset Alzheimer’s, Maggie made it a mission to visit all of the faraway places her mother had always wanted to go. She fulfilled her mother’s bucket list while confronting her slow demise. Interweaving travelogue with family memories, “Braver Than You Think: Around the World on the Trip of My (Mother’s) Lifetime” takes the reader across Machu Picchu, the Nile, Bolivia, India, and Egypt to name a few. As her own world was slipping away, Maggie discovered the world at large. She will share the story of her journey across the globe and through the world of publishing a story she had to tell. ________________________________________________________ ZOOM NOTES: The program begins promptly at 11:00AM.
