• What's your point of view? 1st or 3rd person - which is the best for your story?

"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view." Harper Lee ** We meet this Tuesday 21st May at 7:00 pm in the Bees Knees at the Battersea Arts Centre. Dear writers Looking forward to seeing you at the next Tuesday's Original Writers Group. This workshop will focus on 'Using 1st or 3rd Point of View'. It is being presented by Joe Humphreys, one of the group organisers. To add interest to the evening, Joe has sent me two extracts he'd like us to read and rewrite. “And then, unbidden, seemingly out of nowhere, a thought or image arrives. Some will float into your head like goldfish, lovely, bright, orange, and weightless, and you follow them like a child at an aquarium that was thought to be without fish. Others will step of the shadows like Boo Radley and make you catch your breath or take a step backward. They're often so rich, these unbidden thoughts, and so clear that they feel indelible. But I say write them all down anyway.” Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life ------------------------------------------------------------ Dear writers Looking forward to seeing you next Tuesday when we will discuss ways of brainstorming writing ideas. Nowadays we start the workshop with a few media clips with writers talking about writing. Last week we heard from David Mamet on building plots. This week we want to focus on finding good topics to write about with help from the team at WritingExcuses.com. They are a bunch of writers who just like to talk about writing and they produce a regular fifteen minute discussion covering many subjects. So we will hear from them and then, afterwards share all of our own thoughts and experiences. On a more sombre note, we remember Nahid Mazumder, who recently passed away from liver cancer. Fellow OWG Colinda Letour has written a poignant obituary which I have posted on our website at https://www.originalwritersgroup.co.uk/nahid-mazumder-obituary.html With best wishes, From Rupert and the OWG team DISCOUNTS The Scrivener Discount Scrivener have given us a 20% discount coupon. • Join us to talk about plotting and how it can help your writing

    BAC - Battersea Arts Centre

“It's often about the simple things, isn't it? Painting and photography are first about seeing, they say. Writing is about observing. Technique is secondary. Sometimes the simple is the most difficult.” Linda Olsson ------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Writers, We had an excellent meeting last Tuesday with twelve writers present. We talked about outlines. Children's writer R. L. Stine said 'The hardest thing when you sit down to write a book is the plot and making it hang together. An outline allows you to see what you have and to know where you are going. For me, to create the story and have it in front of me before I start to write is totally useful. Then I can sit down and just relax write. I hardly have to think because I have down all the hard part. I have never much enjoyed outlining, but nowadays I can't work without one.' With the Easter Break we are meeting in three weeks on Tuesday 23rd April when we will discuss how to plot. This is another of those Marmite subjects. Come along and share your experiences. Maybe this will change the way you write. Keep writing! • Working with outlines - like Marmite, you either love them or hate them

    BAC - Battersea Arts Centre

“Writing is a lot like making soup. My subconscious cooks the idea, but I have to sit down at the computer to pour it out.” Robin Wells ------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Writers, I am looking forward to seeing you next Tuesday at the Battersea Arts Centre. Gal will lead this workshop will be and focusing on Outlines. Are they useful or a waste of a writer’s time? They are like Marmite - some love to write them, while others hate them with a passion. But what is the use of using an Outline? How detailed an outline should you write? What kind of outline to write? A mindmap? A blueprint? Other news for the group. Brad is organising a get-together for Friday 5 April at Donna Margherita which is close to the Battersea Arts Centre on Lavender Hill. And we have changed the date for the last meeting in April from 16 April to Tuesday 23 April which is more convenient as it means we will be back from our Easter breaks. So, hoping to see you on Tuesday! From the Original Writers Team, Rupert, Gal, Brad, Simon, Madeleine, Joe and Sen PS Yes, we have grown in the past few months! I am delighted that we now have a group of able volunteers to help run the group. I promised them that this would not be hard work or a big time commitment. We are all here to just get the conversation going and the words flowing. DISCOUNTS The Scrivener Discount Scrivener have given us a 20% discount coupon. • Working with Characters - a writing workshop at the Original Writers Workshop

    BAC - Battersea Arts Centre

    £5.00

"Once you have your characters sitting right there in your head, all you need to do is wind them up, put them down, and simply write what they do, say or think." Terry Pratchett --------------------------------------------- Dear writers We had an excellent meeting last time, in which Gal talked about the benefits and ease of writing a blog. I hope that this has inspired some of you to start your own blogs. Remember that if you do, that I will advertise your blog in this newsletter. Gal's blog is at https://www.galpod.com This coming Tuesday 19th March the topic will be 'Working with characters' when we will be focusing on how to collaborate with your characters. I enjoy reading stories with unpredictable characters. I enjoy being surprised. Not in a melodramatic way, but by good, honest reactions. But sometimes I read stories when the characters appear like wooden marionettes, tied down to plot points, to fulfil some convoluted story. And you know, that instead of this, they just want to jump up and shout 'I'm going home!' So how do we guarantee that our characters come to life? This is what we will be discussing for the first part of the meeting next Tuesday. Come along and share your ideas. Best wishes, Rupert

“Blogging is to writing what extreme sports are to athletics: more free-form, more accident-prone, less formal, more alive. It is, in many ways, writing out loud.” Andrew Sullivan ------------------------------------------------------------ Dear writers This Tuesday's session we will talk about writing blogs. The session will be led by Gal Podjarny who writes a regular post on her website. (https://www.galpod.com/blog-1) I am always curious about people who write blogs. Some writers have gone on to publish books based on their blogs. So, if you are thinking of writing a novel, then maybe this is a good place to start. Gal will talk about what inspired her to keep a blog and sharing her experiences since she started in 2002. I highly recommend this talk. In the meantime, keep writing! • Writing with your Subconscious - Ease off the stress, let your subconscious work

"I want to work in revelations, not just spin silly tales for money. I want to fish as deep down as possible into my own subconscious in the belief that once that far down, everyone will understand because they are the same that far down." Jack Kerouac ------------------------------------------------------------ We meet this Tuesday 19th February at 7:00 pm in the Bees Knees at the Battersea Arts Centre. ------------------------------------------------------------ This Tuesday's session we will talk about writing with your subconscious. Steve Martin said "The conscious mind is the editor, and the subconscious mind is the writer. And the joy of writing, when you’re writing from your subconscious, is beautiful — it’s thrilling. When you’re editing, which is your conscious mind, it’s like torture. And I’ve just kind of decided that anytime it’s torture, I want to stop. I’ll just put it down and wait until it becomes not torture." [NY Times,[masked]] Writer and director Guillermo del Toro also wrote "When you have the intuition that there is something which is there, but out of the reach of your physical world, art and religion are the only means to get to it. Our problem is that we divide things that may be instinctive and collective and we have compartmentalized our perception so strongly that we only get them in glimpses and I think this is where the Jungian archetype comes to work…" So, lots of interesting ideas. Let's meet up on Tuesday and discuss! In the meantime, keep writing! Rupert DISCOUNTS The Masterclass.com Discount This subscription gives you access to all courses. There are some amazing tutors. “When you travel with your family, you may not get the volume of work done you would if you were alone, but you can still do something while recharging. If nothing else, you can gather your own thoughts, write down ideas, observe people around you, and reflect on experiences. Working doesn't always mean putting words on paper.” Barbara DeMarco-Barret ------------------------------------------------------------ Hi there, I hope you had another good week and you are looking forward to our next session this coming Tuesday. It's been a busy week for the Original Writers Group. I am happy to report we have a new organiser joining our team. Gal Podjarny recently joined the group, having moved from Canada to London with her family. She writes a blog which you can read here. (https://www.galpod.com/blog) I am so glad she agreed to help out. At our last group before Xmas meeting, David and Rupert asked me if there was a way to share work online. (Yes, this is another Rupert in our group - not me - this could get so confusing!) So Gal and I talked through the idea and came up with an online group where you share your first drafts. What makes this group special is that we want the writers to become editors. Instead of proposing changes, you make the changes. So there are no boring reports to write. You get the chance to try out your ideas on the story and the writer can either love it or hate it. And you, the editor, get your hands dirty, working under the bonnet, tinkering, and trying to make that engine run faster. We learn by sharing our first drafts and we learn by editing. I’ll be explaining this in depth at next Tuesday’s workshop. So please come to the evening if you are interested in joining the online group. Gal and I have been planning and settled on a list of topics for the next two months: Tuesday, February 5 ‘Deliberate Practice and Writing Practice’ with Gal Tuesday, February 19 'Working with your subconscious’ with Rupert Tuesday, March 5 ‘Setting up a blog’ with Gal Tuesday, March 19 'Working with characters’ with Rupert ‘How to Get Published’ Masterclass It’s five weeks to the ‘How to Get Published’ Masterclass at Foyles in St Martin's Lane on Saturday 9th February.
