Ottawa Book Club Pages

Welcome to the Ottawa Book Club!

We are an informal, collaborative group of book lovers looking to share monthly discussions, and some mid-month social activities related to literature. Members choose the books, members select the venues and we have a lot of fun in addition to reading outside of our comfort zones. There is no charge for the meetings.

Since October of 2012 we have shared dozens of enjoyable nights, author meetings, book discussions and some great movies and plays.

Looking for like-minded bookworms as members for monthly discussions on all kinds of literature. This is a very informal, low-stress group and all we ask is that people read the book and come prepared to talk about their perceptions and opinions, good or bad, in a friendly non-judgmental atmosphere.

The goal we have aimed for with this group is to be pushed out of our conform zones a bit to read and discuss books that we normally would never have picked up.

We also recently added the concept of a "Genre" night. Where no one specific book is read but any book from a collected genre.

- Biography/Autobiography
- Best/Worst book you've ever read
- Science Fiction
- Manbooker/Nobel/Hugo or any book award winners
- Classics
- Foreign (translated)
- Infamous/Banned Books
- Murder/Mystery/Crime
- Local/Canadian authors
- Books from a series

The club came up with the following guidelines for our meetups:

•Meetings will be on the first Monday of the Month but will default to the Tuesday if stat holidays interfere.
•Book and venue selection will rotate through each member on a monthly basis. This is the best way to ensure that at least once, each member will be able to select a book that is dear to their heart as well as a venue that is convenient for them. You don't have to run the meeting alone, people are happy to help with organizing the chats, the venues, or to help you come up with a list of questions.
•You can volunteer to pick a book and head up a discussion once you have attended at least one previous meeting.
•People that select the book for a given month will also select the venue and head up the discussion for that month. If you do not feel confortable heading a discussion, you can still select a book and we will just discuss it as a group.
•Current book selections can be found in the calendar. If a month is not selected or a book picked yet you can always volunteer to be the facilitator for that month and select the book and venue!
•Generally, Fiction will be the preference for books selected though if voted on by members we can add non-fiction as the requests arise and voted on.
•Books will be "Adult" (vs children or young reader).
•No books should be selected out of a series unless they are complete stand-alone stories. Members want to read such books in order so please don't suggest a book that is "8 out of a series of 10".
•No length limit on books suggested. Just make sure it can be read in a month by the average reader.
•If you RSVP, please COME TO THE MEETING. If have RSVP'd and have to drop out, no problem, just please change your status on the website to make room for other members who may wish to fill your spot or so we can update a reservation.
•Please give a book at least the first 50 pages before you decide to abandon it if it's not your cup-of-tea. And if you didn't/couldn't read the book... no problem! Come anyway! The group is also meant to be a social outing for book-minded people. You can share why you didn't like the book.
•Car-pooling is available and encouraged, please let other members know if you need a ride or can offer one to any of the meetups.
•The discussion area on Meetup seems a little limited in functionality so I have also opened up a facebook site to compliment the group and allow us more room to dicsuss the books with people that couldn't attend the actual face to face meeting. The facebook site is located at: http://www.facebook.c...
Lets build the group we want together!
