Three Day Road

by Joseph Boyden

Penguin Group Canada | May 6, 2008 | Trade Paperback

It is 1919, and Niska, the last Oji-Cree woman to live off the land, has received word that one of the two boys she saw off to the Great War has returned. Xavier Bird, her sole living relation, is gravely wounded and addicted to morphine. As Niska slowly paddles her canoe on the three-day journey to bring Xavier home, travelling through the stark but stunning landscape of Northern Ontario, their respective stories emerge-stories of Niska's life among her kin and of Xavier's horrifying experiences in the killing fields of Ypres and the Somme.

Loved this book and enjoyed the questions and different points of view. Tried to read this a couple years ago but had not finished. To prepare for the discussion I did read the whole thing and am extremely impressed with Boyden's writing and story telling.

Is anyone headed out from the downtown area, or is anyone able to offer a ride? I can bus, of course, but a ride would be very much appreciated.

That would be wonderful Michael. Is there a convenient pick-up spot for you? I can meet you right on Rideau Street, if you'd like. You can e-mail me at [masked] and we can go over more details.

Has anyone been to the Odyssey theatre plays in Stathcona park? They are doing George Bernard Shaw's "Arms and the Man." The opening weekend is July 26 -28 and there are shows at 800 pm for 10.00 and a matinee on sunday at 200 also for 10.00 . What do you think?

I'd be interested, but I'm not available that week. :(

Hi Laura. Thanks for thinking of this! I am a fan of plays and have been focusing on Shakespeare mainly, but I would welcome the opportunity to read a new play and see one by a new author! I could do either the evening show or the matinee whichever works for the majority.

I am finding this book compelling yet depressing, I have been talking to my husband and sons about it so I will take that as a good sign, trying to finish before our meetup, looking forward to it.

A few interesting questions to consider: what is brotherhood? Is war perhaps an allegory of relationships or are they the cure? And, who is more dependent on who in the novel? Finally, who is our story teller, and more importantly, who is our audience or listener?

Yikes, sorry to hear that, Mark. Hope you are okay!

      June 24, 2013

Sorry Mark. If your available though, people can car-pool depending on where your coming from?

      June 24, 2013

  • Chris R.

I think I just figured it out!!! I won't say what, in case I'm wrong, or right. But we'll talk about it in a week!!

    June 23, 2013

    • Chris R.

No. Never mind. At least... I don't think I figured it out. Crap.

A great book so far..... but a new game I've decided to play is you have to drink a shot every time you read the word "moose".

    June 21, 2013

    • Michael B.

Damn it Chris, I'm drunk already! Glad it wasn't the good whiskey!
