Hacktoberfest — brought to you by DigitalOcean in partnership with GitHub and Twilio — is a month-long celebration of open source software. Maintainers are invited to guide would-be contributors towards issues that will help move the project forward, and contributors get the opportunity to give back to both projects they like, and ones they've just discovered. No contribution is too small—bug fixes and documentation updates are valid ways of participating. Can't make it to this event? Hacktoberfest is virtual and open to participants from around the globe. Sign up to participate today: https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com/ Rules and Prizes First sign up on the Hacktoberfest site. If you open up five pull requests between October 1 and October 31, you'll win a free, limited edition Hacktoberfest T-shirt. (Pull requests do not have to be merged and accepted; as long as they've been opened between the very start of October 1 and the very end of October 31, they count towards a free T-shirt.) Connect with other Hacktoberfest participants (Hacktobefestants?) by using the hashtag, #hacktoberfest, on your social media platform of choice. New to DigitalOcean? Receive USD $10 in infrastructure credit at do.co/hacktoberfest2018.

  • June Meetup – Casual get-together
Summer time! Join us for casual drinks and good conversation at Talented Oulu offices, Asemakatu 18. (https://talented.fi/). This month, we couldn’t manage to schedule a normal event so instead let’s all meet, enjoy some drinks and relax 😅. If you want to bring your own lightning talk or conversation topic, showcase a project you've been working on, that’s also very welcome 🙏.

  • April Meetup – A journey in Elm land
This month, we are embarking on a journey in the land of Elm (http://elm-lang.org/) – a functional language that compiles to JavaScript, meant for web development. Elm is very popular among the compile-to-JS languages because of its type system, program architecture (that inspired Redux), and outstanding developer experience. For the Meetup, three developers will take us through their journey choosing, learning and using Elm on a real-world project. Here is the full agenda: - 17:30 – doors open, food and beverages will be available - 18:00 – opening words - 18:05 – “Why I chose Elm, and why it works” by Juhamatti Niemelä - 18:40 – “Learning and understanding Elm” by Aleksi Holappa - 19:15 – “Intro to JavaScript interoperability in Elm” by Matti Kerttula - 20:00 – wrap-up The meetup will be held at the Codemate offices, next door to Boogie Software where we gathered in march. Come join us, and bring a friend!

Learn JavaScript and Node.js through self-paced interactive workshops! NodeSchool events have been held around the world, and successfully introduce beginners to JavaScript, Node, and the command-line. We’re excited to bring NodeSchool to Oulu. You can do NodeSchool workshops (http://nodeschool.io/) from home, but the in-person events give you a chance to learn in a collaborative environment, and also to help other beginners if you already have JS/Node experience. In order to participate, you need: • A laptop • A text editor (Visual Studio Code (https://code.visualstudio.com/), Atom (https://atom.io/), etc) • Node.js (https://nodejs.org/) installed on your computer In order to get the most out of this event, please take the time to install Node.js and the NodeSchool workshops you want to do in advance! You will come to the event prepared and thus get more out of it :).
